I have entrusted a fellow to restore my 1971 280 SL, he will be removing the engine. He has asked me to provide him with a shop manual, I'm wandering with which shop manual to provide him with, he tells me that haynes is too general.

Hello Nicolas,
A "person" who is not able to remove the engine would be hardly able to perform a proper restoration process. :o
Removing the SL engine is not much different from removing other cars' engines. ;)
Yes there is a Mercedes workshop manual available, which we here refer to as the "BBB" "Big Blue Bock".
The original ones from those years are of antiquarian status and admit nice collector's value today.
There have been newer reproductions/reprints available from the Classic Center for many years... but I do not know whether these are still available today. Please contact them directly.
Otherwise: see the "Wanted to buy" section here or ebay or ...
Good luck! ;)

(BBB only in German, sorry.... :'( )

The manuals are available from the Classic Centre in California, but in CD form.
Have a look at the following link:

They also have the Technical Data Books available in hardcopy.

I know that there is one of those Haynes (sp?) manual around for
the 230sl's. If you want to go that route. The originals are better
but it might be a start.
