Title: cleaning agent for exisiting rubber seal adhesive
Post by: rutger kohler on November 02, 2011, 07:33:39
Hi, I am about to replace the door seals on my 280SL with new ones. Have removed one and there is quite a lot of old adhesive left on the door itself. What sort of cleaner can I use without daming the paint plse? :)

I asked a similar question about how to remove the old Firewall pad and adhesive.

The suggestion was 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner  #08984.

Comes in quart size but maybe also in a smaller spray size.

Australia: Not sure if this is sold on the other size of the Big Ball but it is available on the 3M website.

I used a 3M product also, I think it was #6041, but not sure (got it on Amazon.Com). It came in a 5 oz aerosol can and worked very well. Leaving it sit overnight and then squirting on a fresh application just before removal made removing the old weatherstrip and adhesive very easy. No harm to paint, smelled good and excess was easily removed with a rag.
