Hi--New member and I'm a novice. I got a 71 that came with a bad case of lack of driving for many years. So far--
Three tanks with Lucas injector cleaner and lub.
Electronic ignition with 40k coil, new plugs. Old plugs came out black.
Adjusted the venturi as per this site.
Now -- You can still smell unburned gas at the exhaust. I adjusted the idle riichness kerl nut on the back of the injector pump one click counterclockwise to lean it and it missed and popped at midrange. I reversed the conterclockwise and added one click clockwise better but still missing at midrange. Could the gum and varnish in the pump cause the adjustments to be reversed?
The pump was remanufactured 8 years ago but lots of sitting since then. I realize the kerl is just idle. I probably need to pull the cover and try the midrange adj. I'm trying to reach the garage that put the pump on to see if they adjusted it as most pumps come adjusted pretty close. Any advice/thoughts will be appreciated?
Lots of help here --I'm going to sign up as a member.

Hello,
Start by changing the main fuel filter first. Coughing through the intake is usually caused by a lean running situatio (clogged fuel filter etc). Check to see if a lot of dirt or rust has collected the fuel filter canister.
Keep us up to date.

I would follow Joe's advice. Have you taken the linkage adjustment tour? Everything else, like fuel volume at the fip, CSV, ignition system should be checked and double checked before attempting to adjust the fuel injection pump. I've tuned the fip as described in the link below.
