Title: Checking cilinder walls

I have plans to take the head of the engine for overhauling.
When the head is of i would like to check the cilinder walls for wear.
Is there a possibility to crank the short block without loosing the time settings from the injection pump and the ignition as well?
Can i leave the chain in place?
All tips and tricks are welcome.

Hello Rini,

The engine can be turned carefully so as not to jamb the loose chain.  Hold the chain up so it does not bunch up on the crankshaft sprocket if you turn the crankshaft. Remember, that the distributor and the injection pump can be wrongly off 180 degrees if you are not careful. Keep track that you do not set camshaft 180 degrees out when you re-install the head.

The max. wear limit of the cylinder walls is 0.10mm for gasoline engines.

Thanks for your answer Joe.
I have the idea to make a bracket where i can put a old cam sprocket on wich can be mounted on the head of the short block.
This to keep the chain on tension when cranking. Maybe it's a silly idea and not possible at all.

Hello Eminent,

Sounds like a lot of extra work, if you get a slight jamb during cranking, just back up a bit and then proceed.
