I have been searching for the cam shaft specs for the 127 981 engine .Does anyone have these? .The engine has a 250SE head fitted and the cam is marked 84 .
I have stripped a 230 down for an overhaul and it has pistons marked 82.98 mm. is this first or second oversize?

For a camshaft marked "84" the following figures apply:
inlet valve opens (BTDC) 10°
inlet valve closes (ABDC) 58°
exhaust valve opens (BBDC) 51°
exhaust valve closes (ATDC) 23°
With reference to the pistons, I am assuming you are referring to the same M127.981 engine.
If so, the the following sizes are applicable (with reference to piston sizes):
Standard = 82.00 mm
Intermediate repair = 82.25 mm
1st repair = 82.50 mm
2nd repair = 83.00 mm

Cheers Jaco!.It looks like it has the 2nd repair size then with a 83mm rebore at sometime. It has been running excessively rich for a long time and the cross hatch has disappeared along with the compression.
Is the 84 cam the correct cam for the 230SL?if not,which cam should it have and what would be the specs for that ?

The "84" cam is the correct cam for a 230SL.
