No...

Mercedes has been selling engines to Asian car manufacturers for years. Ssangyong sold SUV's in Europe with a large label on the windscreen "powered by Mercedes-Benz". Regrettably that was their only redeeming quality. It had looks "only a mother could love".

Unfortunately, Mercedes will be using a Nissan engine in one of their upcoming C-class models.  Not a road that they should be taking.

you can also recall the love-time between Chrysler and Mercedes. As the result, in Europe Chrysler sold cars using MB diesel engines. I used to have one (Chrysler Town&Country called here Chrysler Voyager) with a MB engine that was solid, but was noisy and rustic, probably coming from some utility truck.

Now, besides my Pagoda, I drive a MB GL (also diesel) and am happy that MB for their own cars uses much more civilized engines ;D

The Datsun 6cy in the Z cars of the 70s was mostly Mercedes inspired. I had a girlfriend with a Datsun 240Z back then. The engine was a very close copy of the Mercedes in line six. I used some parts from a Mercedes engine to fix it !

Mercedes and other manufacturers that I like are going down a road that I don't like. This keeps me more and more interested in keeping my older MBs going.

Ssangyong has been building cars in Korea under license from Mercedes for some time now to get around import duties. Also, with the large number of MB V6 engine failures due to balance shaft problems, maybe they should look at alternative engines. All manufacturers have issues from time to time but Mercedes has failed to stand behind these issues and a class action lawsuit has been launched in the US.

But wait!  There's more!  Now Ford is in with a three way partnership for fuel-cell technology!
