Title: Remanufactured Rear Calipers
Post by: Alex D on September 07, 2011, 16:34:46
I am having trouble finding remanufactured rear calipers for my 1967 250SL.  Tried all the common sources, Budz, K&K, MBenz,,, any suggestions from anyone?   All of them can get new, but they are big $$$.

Alex,

Try rockauto.com.  They have them for under $60

Alex,

Try calling a few of the local Foreign Auto Parts stores in your area.  They may be able to have it done locally for you.  Or:

When my car was restored, I took the box of 4 calipers to my local place, S&G http://www.sgparts.com/ and they took care of it all.  They have a place in Toledo, (Holland, near the airport; 419-867-1927).  They still do the rebuilding and tell me the price has not changed drastically over the years.  Worth a call, and drive.

My calipers all looked like crap; were all mostly seized.  I got back 4 calipers that looked like they were brand new.  They've been on the car since.  Though this was 10 years ago I thought the price was quite reasonable at $40 per.

Takes less than a week in general, and the only issue time and cost wise will be if your pistons need replacement.

I've had good luck with classic garage.com for remanufactured ATE calipers, discs, etc. For my '71.

Hello Alex,

Early 230SLs had the unusual three piston front calipers.  Finding them can be an issue. You can upgrade to the later two piston ATE versions, which are used on all the later W113 cars and most MB sedans of the era.. They bolt right up and should be much easier to find. .

Sorry Alex, my last post is not relevant to your 250SL which should have the later front calipers.  In any case resonably priced re-built units should be out there.

I went to my local OReilly's and they had a left front in stock for $49.99, but no right front.  They sent mine to Cardone for rebuilding and I can't believe the rusty seized unit that I sent off could come back looking so nice and it's worked fine ever since.  It ended up costing the same plus shipping which was around $15 extra.  Took about a week to get it back.  It was a very long week, though.
