Title: Horn ring
Post by: drkieffer on September 05, 2011, 17:10:22
Hi
I have a discussion with a Pagode-friend about the horn ring. I claim that a matte ring is the American edition and the chrome is the European. Please give your comments

Scoot - You're right!  Early 113's had chrome, later satin. I could be wrong, but I had been told the change occured during the 68 production year.

I always thought it was a safety issue here in the states?  Mine is a '69 Euro w/ chrome.

Always thought it was a US issue with safety.

Mines delivered Scotland March 1969 with chrome.

Absolutely correct. Mandated by new safety standards after July 12, 1967 (starting with 250SL VIN 2980) all USA version cars had a matte horn ring.
It is all right here: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Interior/SteeringWheel

It still pays to consult the technical manual!  ;)

The chrome horn ring went out as did the chrome inside rear view mirror and the chrome windshield wiper arms at serial number 2980 on the 250SL around July 1967 for the 1968 model year.

Also, full wheel covers went from chrome to satin finish. MB made those changes, chrome finish to satin finish, on numerous items. That hardly sounds like a safety issue! :D
How many lives were saved by the satin, matte finish? Just curious!!
