During the front crankshaft seal replacement, I wanted to remove the timing pointer and clean it up. I have a question about where the seal ring goes. Does it go on the front or back side of the pointer? When I removed it (note: engine has been rebuilt by PO), the seal ring was on the front side of the pointer and the pointer body was flush against the engine block. If that is correct, wouldn't oil seep out behind the pointer before it even got to the seal ring? The EPC also shows the seal ring on the front side of the pointer, although I am not sure if that is accurate.
I would think the seal ring would go on the backside of the pointer and seal against the block. In this configuration, the pointer body is the width of the seal ring off of the block. Adding to the confusion, the marks on the pointer body indicate that the seal ring has been on both sides!
I will also add thread sealant to the threads of the hold down screw. Any body know?

I use two. One under and one above the pointer.

I see what you mean. Two would definitely seal it just in case oil gets past the threads with the sealant on it. The EPC shows to only need one, but it is possible it could still leak.Thanks for the tip!
