Title: Lube points not taking grease
Post by: dseretakis on June 11, 2011, 00:55:28
At least half of my front end lube points will not take any grease. I took off the nipples and shot some grease directly through them. I then re-installed them but it made no difference. What do I do now? Does this mean I need a front end rebuild?

The grease has hardened. Use a heat gun to liquefy the old grease and then you can grease normally.

What do you heat? The nipple area? Can I use a propane torch judiciously?

Hello dseretkis,

Heat is a good direction to take. Be careful of the rubber seals. You can also unsrcew the grease nipples and clean out the cavity, spray some penetrant into the cavity and re-assemble.  Test the grease nipple with the grease gun before re-installing it. Attempt to grease the joint after the nipple is back in place. If it does not take grease drive the car a bit to allow the penetrant to work then try to grease.

You can buy a grease injector which you impact with a hammer to force grease into clogged grease points. Look on line, also Harbor Freight sells them. I think they are less than $20.00

Keep working on it.

As an alternative to a flame would a hair dryer produce sufficient heat for the process to work?

The heat of the hair dryer and the heat you get from your wife for using her hair dryer on your Pagoda should be enough to melt the grease.

point noted.
Fortunately that wouldn't worry a single man.

OK, I have to ask then, what is a single man doing with a hair dryer? :P :D

This thread reminded me I had to do mine... got all of them done apart from one at the right hand side top suspension mount - the nipple is facing in with no way of getting the gun onto it! Wonder how that happened, cant seem to turn it..  So ive ordered a flexible pipe for my gun.

Im glad i did it as half looked like they had very very old grease in them, had to use all my strength to chase out the old grease.

Well, Jordan, some of us still have hair.  :D  They also make a good heat gun for shrink tubing on your electrical connections and a 1300w dryer is still cheaper than most heat guns.

A hair dryer is the best way to get a sluggish and marginally burning charcoal fire in a grill going to "forge strength" real quick.  Don't believe me?  Start your charcoal, wait a few minutes until impatience sets in, and THEN turn that hair dryer on high and blow.

So even BALD men have hair dryers, and marital status is not relevant...just the desire for a good grilling. ;)

Special note to married men: don't use your wife's hair dryer.  Really. :-[

Joe, do the impact grease guns attach to the nipple or do they thread into the grease points?

Here is one http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-10630-lincoln-lubrication-5805.aspx  Looks like you leave the fitting in, although sometimes you do need to replace trhe fittings. If grease comes back out when you pull the grease gun off, then you do. And sometimes they are what is plugged.

be careful with using too much force on the nipples. if you do, you might get a serious backfire. Don't believe me? Well, then ask your wife or girlfriend if you have one and she will confirm.... ;D

If you get backfire working with nipples, you probably aren't doing it right.

Personally I would strip the affected parts and clean them properly. Old grease is as good as no grease.
