I can't see why this should have happened as I thought the axle, and fuel tank, would be fixed in position by their various connections. I don't think the tank has dropped, as it seems hard up against the trunk floor. Anyone had the same problem or know how it occurs?

Hello,
My first guess would be that the main rear axle rubber mount in the trunk is bad and is allowing the assembly to shift out of place. Not to bad a job to change. It can be done from above with just a floor jack below.

Dave,
How did you find out that you had this problem? Does the rear axle make a grinding/squeaking noise when you drive along or go over bumps?

Thanks Joe, the rubber mount probably is bad if it's anything like the other driveline mounts.
James I haven't driven the car for a long time and even then only around the block but I don't recall any grinding or squeaking. It would be worth a look in that area if you hear any metal on metal sounds. I do recall a whine from the rear on deceleration. That may be an internal problem. I'll be real pleased if a new trunk mount fixes both issues.
