Title: 230SL 1966 - Wooden central box missing.
Post by: Paul99 on April 15, 2011, 11:04:06
I have just got a 1966 SL230, Ivory/Black RHD, Power, Auto.  Starting to get the car sorted as it needs a bit of work etc.

I notice the central wooden box is missing.   Any one know where to get one, or the dimensions so I can get one made up please?  My local merc dealer has one, but at £600 plus VAT I am not too keen to get it from there!  Any suggestions please?

Paul.

Hello Paul,
When I bought my car I had the same problem. And I could not find any but buying it very expensive. What I did: I asked to a cabinetmaker close my home. I had previously taken accurate measures of the box.
He did it for me, in my opinion better than the original, and I paid.....30 €.

This could be an idea for you.

Pascal, that sounds a good idea.  Would you still have the measurements so I can get someone local to make one up please? Or are the size details here on the forum somewhere?

Many thanks, Paul.

Hi Paul, I see you are in Hampshire, I am in Southampton if you wanted to come and take your own measurements and pictures perhaps.

A nice little job for the apprentice at the local joiners, you coudn't ask for a simpler bit of joinery!

Hello Paul,
I have taken measurements of MINE...this is to be cross-checked with an original one of course.
I made a drawing for you. I think angles are to be softened when realizing the box.
Color is rather dark.
Let me know if you need something else and please advise me if original measurements are different than mine please.
I attach the drawings and I send you a couple of pictures.

Hi Paul,
I have had one, "stashed away", for a few years. It is still in the original MB box and has never been used, (NOS). I have no idea about its value. Any offers?
If interested, please let me know.
Thanks Paul,
John
