As some you know I've been restoring my 280 for some time but have been twiddling my thumbs for the last 8 months as the only E-coat plant in the UK closed down in June last year. After much searching and pondering I managed to find a company in Germany http://www.carblast.de/ that were prepared to collect the car and carry out the necessary work and they have proved to be most professional. It arrived back yesterday and whilst I haven't seen the shell yet myself the guys at the paint shop say it looks great which is a good job as I've been on bread and water for the last 6 months in order to pay for it. Just a bit of paint and some bolting back together to do then!

David, looks nice.
Just as an FYI, when my car looked like that in primer (not e-coat, just good old fashioned Glasurit), it was a good 9 months until I drove it away...

Looks fantastic - should be a stunning finish to it. What colour will it be in?
Oh, and someone nicked all your doors

That looks really great David, keep the photo's coming during the build.

I'm sort of aiming to get it done by Christmas but will have to see and it will be the original DB180 silver grey but non original red leather. The interior is at D:Class in Cobham at the moment.

Looks good David. If I ever get mine back from the metal finisher I am going to take it for E-coat here in the states(Detroit MI).

So the E-Coat is sprayed on in addition to primer, beforehand? or instead of.
-
180G with red interior is a really good colour combo :-)

E-coat is a electrically applied Epoxy primer. The car is dipped in the primer and a charge is applied to the body which draws the primer into all the seams etc. It is primarily why modern cars no longer disintegrate in the weather.
Needless to say the capital costs are high.

They all rot out in the salt on New York State roads. No vehicle escapes without cancer if you drive here in the Winter. Cars have really been built better to withstand the salt recently though, I remember in the seventies cars just disintigrating. I have a 250SL parts car from Buffalo that is just a hood, doors and trunk lid after everything else rotted away. The E coat does look great, and everything helps. We are constantly fighting rust here, just replaced an oil pan on an 02' Nissan pickup. I couldn't believe how bad that truck has rusted, everything is pretty much rotted out underneath. But, probably because of the high tec paint the body has a couple more years. I will say that most rot occurs where the body was scratched or damaged. Your car looks great, I bet it will never rust with the care you are taking.
