Title: 35 watt fog light-when should it come on?
Post by: rmmchl on April 12, 2011, 02:52:50
on the u.s. versions-mine is an early 250sl------------does anyone know when the round  35 watt bulb should come on--------the bottom amber bulb is the flasher-the 2 little 5 watt bulbs are for the left/ or right park light-when the switch is turned to the left 2 clicks for left side park, and one click left, for the right side park. I'm not sure when the 35 watt fog type light is supposed to be on

I believe you pull out on the switch and twist one click clockwise.

Two clicks and the headlights come on.

Title: 35 watt fog light inactive on these cars?

The manual says if you pull the light switch out and turn clockwise one or 2 clicks the fog lights will come on.  Mine don't come on. The bulbs are good . Did they do something to the US versions to inactivate these, or is something wrong with mine???

Here's the Headlight Switch information from an Owner's Manual for a USA Version car with USA Headlights:
_______________________

Knob in Vertical Position:  Off

Knob One Notch to the Right:  Parking Lights, Tail Lights, Dash and License Plate Lights.

Knob Two Notches to the Right:  Headlights - High or Low Beam - (Operated by Foot Dimmer Switch) and Side Marker Lamps.

Positions in Counterclockwise Direction have no function.

The Pulled-Out Position is free for an option.
___________________________________

The Manual does not mention Fog Lights and shows the Pull Out as not used for USA headlights in a 280SL.

It is my understanding that only the early USA AC style headlight had Fog Lights but that they were removed in the later AN and AJ lights.

Won't help to look at the Technical Manual since I wrote the headlight article and if I'm wrong here I'm also wrong there   :o

Richard,
do you know whether the headlight switch lost its "fog light on/off" function with the change from the AC headlamp (with fog light) to the AN headlamp (w/o fog light)?
From your wiki entry it appears that 'rmmchl's 250SL should have an AC lamp and therefore a functional switch as shown in the page from the 230SL manual in my previous post.

When I put my 280SL (Vin 5600) together again I would like to know whether that on/off function will work or not.
Below are copies of the page from the final 280SL owner's manual that you are quoting, and from the earlier "Preliminary Edition" when the 280SL was introduced.

I talked to david at bud's benz today-My hunch was correct. even though I have a holder for the 35 watt bulb , and I have one in there-they are not wired to work.   Bud's has a car now, that  they are rewiring so the fog light works. So on my 250sl,  the pulling out of the switch will not make the fog lights come. They are basically dummy lights. One of the small 5 watt bulbs idoes come on when the park lights or regular beam lights are used.
