Title: clunking noise on down shifts?
Post by: bugeye on April 11, 2011, 04:58:24
I am new to this Forum. I have a 1970 280SL that I purchased about 5 months ago. On down shifts after the car warms up I hear a clunk sound which seems to come from the rearend area. Has anyone had any experience similar to this or know what the cause is?

Thanks

If it is a manual, then yes - still have no idea what it is and the sound has been there for years - will monitor this thread :-)

Hello bugeye and welcome,

Other issues can cause the clunk to become harsh.  The number one cause for a harsh down shift is improperly adjusted engine linkages.  Look through "The Linkage Tour"  (stickey) on the forumn or in the Tech Manual for the procedure to set up engine linkages correctly. Keep us up to date!
