Hello:
This is about the rubber strip that is cut into about 2 inch lengths to make the bumpers
that sit on the firewall seam to protect the hood projections.
The black rubber bumper material comes in about a two foot length, more than enough
to make the three bumpers.
I lost two of my bumpers recently while having some work done on the engine.
Here's a hint to others: a bit of glue under each may save the bumpers from getting lost.

Considering I have NONE of these bumpers, how about finding how many of us need this, getting it, and splitting it up? I'm in...
-
Perhaps incorrect, but I remember hearing that the 280sl did not have those bumpers. Only the earlier 230 and 250.

Hello Richard,
Yes ... I understand. :o
Please tell me the reliable parts number for the rubber buffer strip. I'll get it from DB and cut three (three, not two) pieces for your. :D
If that stuff isn't hell expensive (< 40 $$), you are going to get those free from me.
But I first need the DB number, and then your NYC address.
Naj once told the (putative) number to us but I don't remember what it was and I am too lazy to search around.
Please let me know

Achim:
You have always been too good to me.
If I remember from some years ago, the material may be available only as a 107 part but let me look for a number.
I have included a photo of a bumper to make sure we all know what we are talking about.

The stuff I got from a vendor once fits but is thinner than the original (if what I think was the original was the original...) Gluing is a good idea -- I have not glued mine yet and they are flighty little guys. Have had to rescue them from the brake booster area a couple times.

Mine does. I had been missing one for years and then after I brought my car "back to life", I found it hiding under the radiator overflow tank. It is now firmly glued back in place

Those bumpers go back to the 190 SL and mine are glued on both.

Each piece is 50mm long and the material is sold in 1m length by SLS for Eur 10.40 plus shipping (p/n 000 987 5070).
The material is similar but not identical to the original one, that is, the inside side wall now has a "barbed" profile.
I needed the 3 pieces for the 280SL and bought them individually from Dave Gallon (about $1 each if I remember correctly), contact him if you need them.

Yyyessssss, Sir ! :D
Now I remeber that number, I am confident Naj mentioned it once. ;D
I'll get it from DB and then ...
Richard, please let me know your address by P/N.
Meine Versprechen halte ich, auch wenn es manchmal eine kleine Ewigkeit dauert. :o

Let me add to the confusion (or create some), here is my note from several years ago:
"Three firewall hood bumpers: may be Part 000 987 91 35 - Covering, rubber 50 mm long; maybe a 230SL part or 190 part".
I see that the part number here is slightly different than the one given above.

Richard,
that is the correct p/n for the original bumpers .. but unfortunately NLA.

I have 000 987 5070 as well. It superceded from 000 987 9135.
If I remember correctly, Albert fron Spain found the part # originally. Hope he still looks in sometimes!!
Tosh, I probably have enough for one car, and since you're nearest (and I owe you), I'll save on postage and send you some.
PM me your postal adddr. I'll have to look for it after coming back from Essen.

For all the 111 owners out there, that (# 000 987 50 70) rubber strip is the same as used on the welded seam on the bottom of the rocker panel. It runs front to back on the seam. It's purpose is to cushion the lower black rocker cover as the cover wraps over the seam.
I just replaced all of my old, hardened ones when I resprayed and derusted the rocker panels. It is not one long piece but rather 3 pieces with breaks. I believe the breaks are to let moisure out. Even still, I had a fair amount of rust on the seam itself from water entrapment. I glued the new ones on and it is good as new.

These pinch weld bumpers were used on all three models. They met the hood at a point where there is a flat reinforcing member (in the hood) that is perpendicular to the cowl. I believe the 190SL also used them so it's probably a 121 part number. At any rate I believe they have been reproduced. I will research this and get back to all of you. They were inexpensive, but as I recall the company had a fairly large minimum order so maybe it just makes sense for me to buy 100 of them and offer them to members.

consider me in if something gets in the works for members. I know mine are no longer around.

I will be interested to hear about these. I thought there was a difference between the bumpers on the 121 (190 SL) and the 113 cars. The 121 bumpers had a more rounded profile, while the 113 ones had a more square look.
-
The bumpers on my 190 SL are flat. Haven't seen it any other way on the many 190 SLs I've seen.
The first picture is my car with replacement bumpers.
The second picture is an ALL ORIGINAL, 6500 mile, 1962 190 SL that I unfortunately didn't buy when I had the chance.
-
This is the position the bumpers should be in. They are in the spot from the factory. Line them up with the hood at the arrows. (I had to replace the firewall pad it is not the original.)
-
I investigated the web site for Metro rubber: http://www.metrommp.com/. The price is $6.15 for four pieces intended for the 190SL. These bumpers are longer than the ones we need for the pagodas, but can be trimmed to suit. The Metro part number is HF-47. I suggest each of you contact them in your own. I may buy a few sets and trim them down to size and bring them to PUB this year.
I will also bring some Norma clamp kits as well
