Title: Hood Hinge color
Post by: Rolland on March 18, 2011, 21:47:23
having searched the site, I'm not finding the appropriate way the hood hinges should be done, painted body color, black, gray, or any other color.  I've looked at many a pic of engine bays, but none really show this area too well.

Thanks in advance,

Rolland

The hood hinges should be body color as is the sheet metal inside the engine bay and the underside of the hood. Just went and checked - that is what mine are anyway.

Thanks, that's what I thought, but my Pagoda was painted once before, so I didn't trust it was body color.

One more question, the hood catch on the side of the hood, is it also body color?

Thanks John. I notice from your signature line you purchased your Pagoda on my birthday.  Only difference between your Pagoda and me in age, is I rolled off the assembly line in 1955..... :)

Well, I guess two great events happened on September 18, just a few years apart:-)

Just had my hinges plated yellow zinc chromate.  I perfer the look of yellow zinc better then the painted body color.  Makes the engine compartment really pop.

I thought that the underside of the hood was painted grey (flat black).

It seems that they go occasionally body color on respray, but isn't the factory color grey?

No, hood was always in body color and until about middle 1969 always with visible paint runs.

Robert,  any chance you have some pics of your hinges?  I'm just curious as to what they look like.

Thanks,

Rolland

Rolland,
I will take pictures first thing in the morning and post here.  Also if you would want yours done in yellow zinc.  The company who did mine is really good at what they do, and are close to me here in Virginia.

Since this is Hijacking Week around here... Can somebody answer this one. Do the two bolts that hold the hinges to the hood (bonnet) have a nut on the back or some type of receiver plate?

On my drivers side, I have some play at the hinge when I lift the hood. I suspected a loose bolt but it just turns without completely tightening. Don't know if it is broken or something else?

Hey -- its very related.

In fact, just noticed Bob's driver's side has nut on outside -- mine face inwards on both sides...

James,
here is a photo of the hinge (in body color) in the Motoringinvestment car that we are discussing in another topic.
Unfortunately I cannot blow it up further but does that answer your question?

Thanks Alfred. No, not really. It looks like mine for sure. But my left bolt wont tighten snug. I can sort of shine a light through a crevice to see behind but cannot tell if there should be a nut on there, or if it screws into the hood or some sort of bracket and its stripped? Or maybe the bolt itself is broken. In any event its a pretty tight squeeze to get back there.

How about this: has anyone who has removed hood simply backed out those bolts, then re-tightened? This would indicate no separate nut on the inside.

Thanks.

Hi, James,

Yes, there are two threaded plates and I unscrew these bolts to remove the bonnet.

The holes are slotted and the nut/threaded plates move independently of each other. The two flat rivet heads may explain why. You do need the movement to correctly adjust the bonnet gap etc. Note the yellow marker lines. Helps to put it back without having to tinker adjustment.
The stud and nut arrangement may be a repair because of damaged threads, which seems to be the case with yours as the bolts wont tighten.

Thanks Naj, I bet you are correct that it is stripped. One bolt is holding so the amount of play is minimal. But if you look at my hood gap, my driver's side sits a little high and I can actually push it into place. A 1/16 of an inch is all it takes.

I am curious if I will be able to back it out. If I can, would a thicker bolt be an option? Or else, I may be able to wiggle a bolt in from behind (like Bob's)?

Ok. On further review I have to retract something. I just looked again, and I actually have all four hinge bolts facing out, with a washer and nut on each. Similar to Robert's driver's side. The one still spins without becoming snug (that part I remembered correctly!) -- but I think the bolt and nut are spinning together.

I will have to try and get a wrench on the back side?

And Rolland... my hood hinges are body colored...

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help.  I like the yellow zink look and on some colors would probably consider it, but on mine will probably keep them body color since it's Signal Red.
