What is the best automatic transmission fluid for a 66 230SL?
-
Hello Theo,
The recommended fluid changes from time to time depending on new formulations, availability etc. A 1970 Service Bulletin from the factory says to use Dextron if Type "A" is not available. I would check with the Classic center for the latest recommendations.

Thanks ja, excuse my ignorance but as a new member and new owner, what is the classic center?

Theo,
here is a link to the web site:

Worth a visit - is Irvine close to you?

Thank you Alfred, its great to know about them, I am nowhere near there but let me phone them and see what they say.

Type "A" transmission fluid is commonly replaced with the generic dexron/merc ATF

Kind of reminds me of the movie Good morning Vietnam. Robbin Williams pretends that he's asking someone working with artillery what he wants to hear as a requested song. The pretended artillery guy replies.
'' I don't care, as long as it's, LOUD!!!! ''
Same idea here. Doesn't matter as long as it's red. And it says ATF on the can.
