Title: Common Parts List
Post by: ctaylor738 on February 28, 2011, 16:18:57
Some time ago, I bought a Mercedes publication on e-Bay titled "Schluessel-Liste Nr. 7 fur DIN und Normteile."  This is basically a guide to the "N" part numbers (screws, washers, nuts, etc.) used on cars in the 60s.  I have found it useful for assembling my 280SL project, like figuring out what screws to use to hold the throttle linkage to the firewall.  You find the part in the EPC or paper book, then look it up in the Liste and find the description, size, length and finish of the screw.

I am wondering if this would be of interest to others, like available on this web site.  I am willing to investigate the alternatives to make it searchable online.  It is not copyrighted.

Attached are the introductory pages and sample data page.

If you look on the data page at the first line under the heading DIN 84, you will see a number, 000084 002104 in the first column.  This is the N part number.  To the right you will see that it is a 2mm screw, 25mm long, with a galvanized highly polished finish.  From the heading, you know that it is a lens-head screw.

I think it would be excellent if that could be loaded in to a spread sheet and made available to all. The only problem then would be to find the correct screw in the parts book!

The dealers parts books have all the parts numbers at the back of the book in numerical order. You find the part number and then it will say which page the part number is found. Not much help but maybe useful to know.

One nice feature of the EPC is that if you click on a numbered part in the diagram, it generally lists the common parts that go with it.  See the attached, where I clicked on the lower left lock for the soft top hatch and it gave me the screws and washers to secure it.  I then went to the Liste and found out the screws were 10 mm in length.

This has been a huge help in assembly since all the stuff came basically in a big pile.

Hello Chuck,

That norm parts list would be terrific.

Thanks a lot

The problem that we run into with the "N" parts is substitutions. For example, many of the phillips head screws are being replaced with torx !!!! Drives me nuts. Seems every time a part number changes on hardware, the specification changes and often is so far off that it's a useless part for the intended application. But having the DIN specs on the part will surely assist in finding it elsewhere.

Interesting that you mention that Tom. I once purchased some screws for the heavy chrome trim along the body crease around the sides of the Pagoda from MB Germany and they had substituted a Torx screw for the original Phillips. I wouldn't mind finding that number again because it was a good theft prevention for those parts and everyone knows I can use a lot of that. Seems like they replaced it again with another part though?....

I have recently substituted all sorts of theft prevention screws on my car for the doors, bumpers, soft top....
