Title: steering wheel modification
Post by: hauser on February 27, 2011, 08:00:26
I've got an idea about modifying the stock steering wheel in my 280sl.  I'd like to have a smaller diameter stock wheel.  I have no idea if this is possible or if it would work.

I like the look of the stock wheel but it's a bit too large.  A Nardi would fit the bill but I would loose out on the security features I have with the stock set up.

I am not sure what security features you are referring to, but you will no longer be able to claim yours is an all original 280SL.

In what way do you mean it is too big?

I think he means the diameter of the wheel is too large.  That is the distance from one side of the wheel to the other at its largest point.  Some people are larger and have trouble sliding their thighs under the larger diameter steering wheel when getting in and out of the car...that's one reason they may seek a change.  Another reason is that with power steering, a smaller diameter wheel would make the car more responsive, less movement of the wheel results in greater movement of the steering shaft, without being significantly more difficult to steer.

For some people, originality is not a big issue, and of course, there's always that distinction between original and correct.  I'm not sure exactly which you meant.
