Can anyone identify the fog lamps / running lights on the attached?
Were they an option on the W113 when new?
Ideas as to best place to get ahold of a pair..?
Thanks for the help.

Not sure about the light in the photo but many (most or maybe all) of the fog lights on these cars were Heller lights.
Here is a photo of a Heller light on my Euro version car. The base of the light in your photo is not the same but Heller lights of the 60's came in several slightly different versions over the years. The inside wiring of Heller fogs is not always the same.
Hellers are available on web bidding sites from time to time. Look carefully to make sure the lights are complete including the base attaching parts. Typical price might be from $100 to $200 for a pair. A genuine light is marked "Heller" on the lens. Replacement bulbs are available if needed.

Hella still sells them. Classic 160's. Should be able to order them through any Hella dealer. Note that you can specify fog or highbeam driving lamps.
http://www.pagodenteile.de/89.htm (Pagoden Teile) sell them but they are about 50% more expensive than ordered direct from Hella dealers.

Thanks Peter.
Couple of questions:
1.) Does a hole need to be drilled into the bumper in order to affix?
2.) To your knowledge - is the wiring harness and dashboard switch installation very complex...or easy stuff?
Again - thanks,

The photo of the light available from Peter's source has a blue Logo on the lens. This was not on the vintage lights. This would show that the light was a modern add-on. If that is OK with you, Peter's sources would be convenient and you would have new lights. If you want the original look, you may have to purchase an older light on a bidding site or from a parts dealer.
The lights can be set in the hole for the USA Bumper Guards. If your bumper is a USA version and you remove the front guards, you are all set...else new holes are needed.
Wiring. I have seen cars with the bumper fog wire cut into the existing fog light wire in the Euro headlight unit. You may know that Euro headlights include a fog light bulb that is activated by pulling the light switch out while in the low beam or high beam position.
Here's a link to a short article on Fog Lights in the Tech Manual.

The article on Euro Lights has photos of the wiring.

Actually, my lights do not have a logo in the middle (see my picture here http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Profiles/PeterVanEs). I ordered mine from Pagodenteile.
Typically you'd need to drill holes in the bumper to affix. I cheated. I took the bumper overriders off and mounted my lights in the remaining holes. Pro: no drilling needed, reversible. Con: they are a little closer to the middle rather than to the outside lights. Again, see my picture. It does not annoy me.
If you add two 35 Watt bulbs, best to switch them through a relay. I have a small switch under my dashboard (invisible) with a thin wire to a standard relay. Then thicker wires switched through the relay from the battery to the lights.
For an axample see: http://www.accessconnect.com/fog_driving_lights_wiring.htm
I've used the second kind of hookup as I want to be able to switch my driving lamps regardless of settings of other lights. For fog lights I'd recommend the first diagram (as they are not meant to be on unless headlights are on).

Peter, I really like the way yours look. Who said Cheaters never prosper!

Thanks to all for the great information. Went ahead with the Hella 160's.
Can't go wrong with that look.
Will post jpg's once installed.

The foglights shown on the vendor websites do not look like what I was expecting. I was expecting the lights that also came on some w114 cars in the United States, and that look like the picture in the technical manual. My question is whether or not a reflector from a "newer" foglight can be used in the older foglight. I have lots of the chrome bodies for the old foglights, but no sealing gaskets and very few usable reflectors. And is the glass TN6 lens available?
thanks

Hi--
I'm not ready for fog lamp installation yet, but I plan to use brackets like these on the bumper mounting irons.
I think that they are available on eBay and fairly reasonable in price.
I don't want to drill the bumpers, and these looked like a solid alternative.

I've always thought that the big round driving lights look period correct and certainly deliver lots of light, but don't seem to look like they're really at home on the car. I guess it's like opinions of the bumper guards; a matter of taste or function over form. I think that the gentle rectangular proportions of our cars would be better matched with chrome rectangular lights. Anyone out there seen or, better yet, have a photo of that?
-
I used to have those, and actually, I did not like them. Then again, they were not the small rectangular ones that are common on R107's but some larger model I got secondhand somewhere. Below a picture of what the car looked like then, and click here to see it now: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Profiles/PeterVanEs

When the driving/fog lights were installed on the bumper as original equipment, where was the original switch for them? I am referring to the separate switch, not the headlight switch pullout position for the integrated euro foglamps.

I was told that the switch for the bumper mounted headlights was a pull-out in the center tray right behind the ashtray - the same location as the rear window defroster. If you have both, there would be two switches side by side.

Hello Joe (IXLR8)
My car is about 100 miles away so I cant check. Is there enough room between the bumper and the splash pan (apron) for the "arm" of the type of mounting brackets you show? I have a nice pair of fog lamps and this type of bracket would allow for an easy reversal if I decide I don't like the look.
Thanks

We're an interesting bunch. All this talk about how the car looks, (understandably) and none about function. How much difference do the driving or fog lamps make? I have factory fog lamps on two other cars, and don't find them much of an advantage over low-beam headlights. I had Lucas driving lights on a car once and they were like another set of high beams. Just so-so. The Hella high beams on my Bimmer will light up the night all by themselves.
-
Good point. On rallies, at night, the high beams (driving lamps, which I have) really add to long range visibility. However in the mountains with snow, hairpins etc they are not as useful as you might think... wide beams showing you the turn into corners are more useful... these are like the built in fog lamps... wider, but need to be better.
So ideally I'd have 4 lamps on my bumper. Alternatively, many drivers use one high beam, and one wide beam angled sightly to the right...
But I'm very happy with my Hella high beams. Both form and function.

Joe,
Do you know of any supplier of the Fog Light Clamps as you show three such types?
Bob
-
Installed the Hella 160's the old-fashioned way - drilled holes into the bumper. Seems a better idea than trying to affix with clamps due to added stability. Thanks to all - especially the information from Faszination SL as to the distances from grade and from the wheel well.

Hi--
If you are interested in brackets for your fog lights, these are on eBay on April 3, 2011.
A wide range of prices and quality.
Hope this helps.

Joe,
Already past the point of no return as I've drilled holes into the bumper and have installed.
Although I appreciate the effort - I am uncertain that the ones you've linked to on Ebay would work on a W113.
Thanks regardless,
Mark
