Title: Paint Colour Codes
Post by: Gary Crutchley on February 07, 2011, 06:03:12
Guys, I’m in the process of replacing some fairly shabby alloy wheels on my 230SL with steel wheels, hub caps and beauty rims.  I bought the wheels from a wrecker and the hub caps and beauty trims are on order form Miller Benz in the US.  The steel wheels are being trued, blasted and painted in two pack paint to match the body colour.  That’s where the fun begins, I thought it was simple, the colour code on the car is 670H which matches the code listed in the Technical Information of this web site and also the colour description of Light Ivory.  For what it’s worth – it even looks right, however I realise that computer monitors etc are nothing to go by.

The wheel repair company rang me today to say their painter could find no such code so I rang Mercedes Benz Melbourne and asked them to look it up for me but they couldn’t find the code of 670 or 670H either!  I then gave them the VIN number of the car but they weren’t able to establish anything from that – even though it is an Australian delivered car.  I asked them to search by colour name but they could only come up with paint codes of more modern Mercs.  Now I’m struggling – it should be simple, 670 or 670H looks to me to be correct.  The correct match is even more important for the painting of the hub caps.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help me out please?

Gary,
You need to be a bit careful of trying to match your car colour to the colours shown on here as every monitor/computer will show it differently.  I know I got the wrong green when I ordered some touch up a few years ago.

The paint codes and the suppliers are shown on the vehicle's Body and Paint Number Plate if you still have it on the car.
A way to confirm the colour is to get your data card from the Mercedes Classic Centre in California. They provide then in a matter of days on request for free.

Having said that, the codes here are correct and the painter needs to go to the paint suppliers and explain that the code is for a Herberts paint and can go the the following site who will provide the formula.

http://www.standox.de
click on "Farbtonsuche"
select your language
click on "special search"
select "passenger car", click on the forward arrow
select "MERCEDES", forward
enter your color code; e.g. 180, forward
select "Basislack", forward.

Cheers
Garry

Gary, the colour 670 , light ivory, is no longer available from Mercedes.  I know because that is the colour of my 71 coupe and I tried to order touch up paint for it.  It wasn't available from my local MB dealer, nor from Germany.  It is no longer made.  I ended up getting some from a body shop paint supplier.  Surprisingly they had the 670 code in their system for Mercedes and they made me a small container of touch up paint.  You may be able to get it from the site suggested from Garry, but not from MB.  Good luck.

Also note that the correct hubcap color is the color of the Hard Top which may not be the same color as the body.

Guys, I finally have my 230SL on the road.  It’s still a work in progress.  In the last few months there has been some rust removal, a new radiator and associated hoses, electronic ignition, spark plugs, new engine mounts and a whole heap of smaller items that were either related to these or discovered along the way.  The biggest expense was finding second hand steel rims, having them trued and painted and buying hub caps and having them painted as well (which is where this post started).  As I said it’s still a work in progress but I’m now able to take her out and enjoy her beauty and what a blast!  I’ve attached a couple of photos I took on the weekend. regards

Garry, your car is lovely and congrats for whatever you did to get the wheels. How did you resolve your issue with unvailable paint?

Garry, car looks great.  Your car and pictures are a beautiful example of the clean lines and purity of the early 113s.

Are those Vredesteins?

Beautiful car, Gary.

John, if you look carefully at the first photo, you can just make out that Gary fitted Michelin MXV's.

Thanks for the compliments, it still has a way to go.  Not the least of which is the grill star.  Jacovdw is correct – the tyres are Michelin MXV’s – not sure that I’m entirely happy with them as they all had a slow leak which I believe is where the rim of the tyre mates against the wheel rim there are a number of small rubber moulding lines and the seal is not perfect.  Having said that seem to have settled in.
With regard to paint colour/code - in the end I just asked the wheel refurbishers to colour match and they seemed to do a pretty good job – they match the vent cowl which I was able to remove and give to them as a sample.
regards
