Remember a while back we were discussing the merits of someone asking too much money for JL's car? Well, it's back on the market at an even greater price!!!
-
Is it listed somewhere? Where? Always fun to see these things you know!
-
Here you go Michael,
I am a Beatles fan as much as the next guy but 495K are you kidding me.
http://www.mercedesheritage.com/classifieds/viewlisting.php?view=2055
-
For that kind of money, we could fabricate a matching one, AND fabricate a jolly good story to go along with it...maybe throw in a John Lennon piano too.
Honestly, don't think it will sell at that price.
-
This car has been on the market for quite some time now by the same seller.
-
Michael,
You suggested MercedesHeritage as a possible site for RHD drive car, You wanting me to part with $495k for the Lennon car!! ;)
-
Come on Garry, Kate would love it she'd be like 'a puppet on a string' ;)
-
Maybe I'm the puppet on the string, she asked me to get her a blue Auto, any model. I havent been game to tell her that the Lennon car is blue on blue :o I'll ask if they will take $35k
-
Michael,

Actually, no--I had never heard of them and their generic-looking website has me suspect from the start. I suggested The Star classifieds, Hemmings, OurSL, and the SL Market Letter...
-
This car has been on the market for quite some time now by the same seller.
And the car will continue to stay on the market with an asking price like that.
-
'a puppet on a string'
And if you do buy it I'll be a "Jealous Guy"
-
Michael,
OurSL when you key their classifieds is MercedesHerritage. appears one and the same
-
I see. Must be something new, I only went to OurSL a few times and that was a long time ago. I had never heard of Mercedes Heritage.

John Lennon's 1980's yellow turbo diesel wagon was on sale at RM auctions in Toronto a few years ago at $125,000 but there were no takers. It had big speaker boxes in the back.
Apparently Yoko hated him driving that car and the story is that he did not drive the car that day and when he walked out the front of the building the killer was waiting for him.

Just saw Saturday FT magazine (Aung San Suu Kyi on the cover) that showed John Lennon's Ferrari 330 GT? as being auctioned "next Saturday" with a guide of EUR120000/170000. The 330 was blue and a 4 seater, and once upon a time used to sell for prices not dissimilar to our Pagodas.
Maybe John left some good dope in the Pagoda, or maybe they'll be smoking some at the auction. Time will tell!

I have seen this car in person when I lived in Tampa. Took a drive down to Sarasota for a Sunday visit to the Classic Car Museum across the street from the Ringling Brothers manion. The SL was on display in the museum. The museum must need some operating capital and wishes to sell it to hopefully another museum, at that price, (only a museum would want to pay that figure). I do remember that the car is in original worn condition, as the photos show. Infact the photos look like they might have been taken at the museum where the car is displayed. I even took some photos of this car back then. I must go dig them up.

New one on me....
-
wow almost 500,00!!!! You have got to be a super duper john lennon fan with lots of mooolah to buy that :)
-
I paid way less for John Lennon's 1987 Dodge Caravan!

I noticed under the "other cars" category that Steve McQueen's '70 911S may be coming up for auction. (I used to own a 911S of that period and it was a terrific machine). I clicked on the link in the first entry of the Other Cars thread, which took me to the "Early 911S Registry". There, in entry #8, a poster guesses McQueen's 911S may go for $300-400K, or perhaps $450K (USD). Entry #22 (out of a total of 66) speculated it will not clear $650K. I wonder, might this be a reasonable estimate range for celebrity owned Porsche 911S?
-
Somewhat on/off topic - last fall I learned that the El Camino that featured (extensively) in the 'My name is Earl' TV series was auctioned in May 2010, and fetched something like US$ 6,000. So much for celebrity value. Since even I would have bought the car for that amount, I felt sorry I missed the auction. Then, just last week, for some reason I decided to check out the car's current whereabouts and it turned out to have just gotten sold at auction once again, only weeks earlier, for (as I recall) only a bit more, still under $10K. At this point, if there's anyone who knows the next auction that this car will be sold at, please send me a message so I can finally have a shot at getting it!

As John and Paul wrote:
"Baby you can drive my car,
Yes it's gonna be a star.
Baby you can drive my car,
And baby I love you.!!
Toot, toot yeah!"
For half a Mill...Nooo! :'(

I live in the area, and have been looking for an SL for a few months. Each time this $495000 car would pop up on the top of my search, and each time, I though the poor seller did not realize he made a mistake and added an extra zero at the end :-)
Until one day I finally looked at it and saw it was the Lennon car... Yet I still think there's an extra zero....
-
Hey Cess,
That El Camino would be a real "eye catcher" down at your place in the south of France! Also would be handy for hauling any livestock or pagoda parts ! ::)

Another (purportedly) Fab Four car comes to market...

it's been a while, but it seems that the car is now back to the market, offered by Vintage Motors in Sarassota
http://www.vintagemotorssarasota.com/Car_pages/Mercedes/65MB230SL/65mb230sl.htm
I notice that the price is still the same as at the Heritage some time ago, but the body does not look great.
-
Still at 495,000 USD:

-
Does it make it more expensive because this is in fact a R113 instead of a W113? ;)
-
Mine is way nicer than that one and mine is a 280SL slightly below $100K LOL Okay ... Okay I'm a nobody hehehe however still loving my car and no mine is NOT for sale :)
-
It looks like we might have some "price discovery" on Lennon's Pagoda this month: it's up for auction on the 18th
http://www.worldwide-auctioneers.com/auctions/details.cfm?vehicleID=61&id=57
-
Sure looks like they picked the wrong auction. It should have gone to Amelia Island or Pebble Beach with Gooding Auctions. I doubt with the lineup they have at that auction they will attract the right crowd and they don't seem to be marketing it very well. If it were crossing Goodings' block word would be everywhere as it was when Jerry Seinfeld auctioned 22 million dollars of cars from his collection. The Seinfeld collection brought some stupid money like $121,000 USD for a 1961 Volkswagon Beetle! Honestly, I think this auction would be a good opportunity for someone to get a "deal" if they were so inclined.
For me the overall issue is that John Lennon was known for his non material beliefs(Even though Paul Mccartney once claimed that Lennon called him up and asked him to come over and help him write a new swimming pool) besides that fact he wasn't even a car guy. Newman and McQueen whose former cars are quite valuable were not only car guys the both modified and raced their own cars. People buy their cars to somehow associate themselves with their spirit of cool and their love of cars. Someone who wants to capture some piece of John Lennon's spirit is probably not going to want to buy his car.
I am betting it won't make reserve.

sold at $225,000 USD. A far cry from their $500,000 to $2,000,000 estimate.
