Title: Hub Cap Restoration
Post by: n/a on April 24, 2004, 09:25:51
Hi,  I recently purchased a 1969 280SL and am looking to restore/replace the wheel covers.  What is the recommended course of action?  I have a spare set I could send off to be chromed but don't know where to get this done.  Or is there a place to purchase new/restored hubcaps?

Thanks for the help, Wayne

They're available from your friendly MB dealer. Not too expensive either.

I believe early 280 SLs originally had heavier stainless steel hubcaps; the ones from the dealer aren't quite as heavy or nice, but they are basically the same to the naked eye.

They're about $50 a piece. I got four new ones two years ago, they look great. Painting them can be a hassle though - check out the other topic now 'live' on a silicone masking tool that you may be able to borrow.

I painted mine after painstakingly masking the necessary surfaces with masking tape. Turned out o.k. but not perfect.
