Title: Main Bearing Cap
Post by: pauldridge on November 23, 2010, 20:22:02
The machine shop somehow managed to lose ONE of the main bearing caps on my '70 280SE/SL engine.  Anyone know where I could find a used serviceable replacement?

Hello Phil,

I have plenty of these. I will need to know which one it is (position in the block) and the engine number on your block. In addition the machine shop will have to line bore your engine after they get another main cap. These are not interchangalbe between engines and must be re-machined after installation on the new block. (line bore). PM me if you like.

A set of seven main caps are mostly numbered from the factory on the vertical end by...... #1,  #2, (the third cap, number three, is not numbered but is identified by having the only  machined surface to accept the main thrust bearing), #4, #5, #6, (number seven is also not numbered but is identified by process of illimination) !

It's up to the repair shop to replace the main bearing cap and then line bore the mains. They are the bailee and have the key. Simple commercial law.
