Title: 1970 280SL Euro Model 'AUTOMATIC' emblem?
Post by: 1970280SL on September 17, 2010, 20:07:28
I own a 1970 280SL, and I was wondering if the 1970 SL European model came with the "AUTOMATIC" emblem below the "280 SL" emblem…. I know some Euro models had the "AUTOMATIC" emblem---does anyone know if the 1970 Euro model had it?

I know the "automatic" emblem was a status symbol (of sorts) for the European cars of the time. I do not know if it was always included. I think the owner when ordering may have had the options of requesting it or not. I will also be interested to hear what others have to type about this.

Automatic-Pagoden

Hey Automatic-Fans,

As to my knowledge European Automatic-Pagodas always had the 'Automatic' emblem below the type designation on the trunk lid. I fully agree with Jonny B on this topic but I don't know what order code the "Wegfall Automatic-Zeichen", i.e. its deletion was. It was not in the 1970 Mercedes option list (which I have).

I also don't exactly know as to whether all US automatic-Pagodas were without 'Automatic' emblem. I once heard rumors that the very early 230ie had (until 1964??) but I don't know for sure and cannot prove that for now.

Best,
Achim
