Title: w113 as a police car???
Post by: Ulf on September 08, 2010, 18:06:30
Just came across this when browsing the German Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.de/STABO-car-Mercedes-230-SL-Pagode-Polizei-bespielt-fahrt-/320582939218?pt=Rennbahnen_und_Slotcars&hash=item4aa43b7252#ht_1074wt_1092

But did the "Polizei" ever use Pagodas or is this just a fantasy toy? I know they used Porsches and BMW's...

I'm not from Germany and cannot confirm... but a judging from the stickers and the non-original wing mirrors it looks like a hobbyist became rather too creative!

Ulf, Peter,
If you look once in a while under Tekno on Ebay, you will come across a Politi 230SL in white and black.
So I'm assuming that the police did have a Pagoda in one of their divisions for the autobahn driving.

It would be really cool to find a few photos of that - imagine speeding in your Pagoda only to be pulled over by Pagoda-driving cops....

Ulf,
there is even a Danish company that dreamed up  230SL "Polizei" cars:

But with "gangsta' white walls  ???.

This is Tekno No 932. German version was green-white. Danish version "Politi" and
Swedish version "Polis" were black and white. All three were available as a 230SL,
250SL or 280SL, depending on year produced at the Tekno toy factory in Denmark

The regular Pagoda was No928 for open version, and 929 for version with hard top mounted
Various colours, although white and signal red are the most common...
They were very nice model cars for their time - a wide range available back then.
If I begged long enough, I got to buy with mothers assistance perhaps a truck or an
excavator, such contractors machinery was my preference at the time :D

As an aside the Tekno toy factory was started in 1928, and went bankrupt and closed in 1972
Some tooling mainly for truck models was sold to Holland so some toys were later produced
there. Also, some model cars were assembled from left over spare parts - collectors beware! :-(

The Tekno company produced No 834 a Mustang marked with "Police" as well.
Like the Pagoda police car, that one didn't exist in real life either....

Well...

In 1958 Austria used Porsche 356A Carriolets as Police cars, right up until 1965 when they bought 230SL and then 911 Targas for high speed work and the 356 fleet were sold in 1968.

Cops in the UK routinely use BMW 535d, Range Rover, Jaguar, Volvo and Mercedes cars - and by exception have "trialed" Lotus Esprit, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche 968 and various others either for genuine patrol or as publicity vehicles to get across a message....

Never say never...

Here in the USA V8 powered Mustang II's that had been confiscated from drug trafficers were pressed into service as police interceptors. I think this was more for PR than anything else, but there actually were Mustang Highway Patrol cars here in America.

The Tekno toy cars are now much sought-after collector's items here in Denmark. The guy, who started the whole thing was a plumber, who - as a hobby - started making toys in his basement in the mid-1930's. It soon grew into a factory and in 1950 moved into the Swedish market. They went bankrupt in 1972 and sold off the remains to a Dutch company.
When you talk to most men between 50 and 70, they get all emotional about their old Tekno toy cars.

If only we Danes could have produced real cars...but then again we might have made them out of LEGO bricks and with bacon interior - but with very nice Bang & Olufsen stereos...

For those of you thinking speeding on the Autobahn is a good idea, and in keeping with the topic, the german Autobahnpolizei still uses fast cars routinely.... maybe not this very ridiculously fast and expensive one, but they still use Porsches quite often. Try to get away from this one:

top speed 365km/h!!!!!!!!!!!   Thank god they won't be putting it to official use  ;)
