Title: 107 on Wheeler Dealers
Post by: Ulf on August 27, 2010, 10:53:13
Here's a link to a programme on BBC called Wheeler Dealers - the concept is that they find a car in need of a little TLC, restore it within a budget and sell it on with a profit. It's not a Pagoda, but it's worth watching :-)

Enjoy the weekend!

i keep watching that show for no particular reason.  The two characters that host can be entertaining and it would be nice to have a mechanic in your back pocket to turn things around like they do.  Im not sure if the show is designed to teach us how to turn a profit on cars or rather just to be a voyeur on their escapades

I have seen most of them and every time I get an urge to fiddle around - but that tall guy makes everything look so easy

But would you buy a Pagoda (or any car for that matter) from the shorter bloke?

There are a lot of series as such, I don’t mean that there are series that have the similar plot or what they will do in the series, but what I am saying here is that there are a lot of series that are not that good, but we are tend to be drawn to watch it. This is actually very entertaining and informative as well, it tells you what you should and you shouldn’t do if you wanted to sell an old car of yours.

That short guy is not much of a negotiator, at least judging from the way he dealt with the German seller of this car. And I believe he misrepresented (euphemism for 'lied' about) the car to the buyer, claiming it was a one-owner car. Anyway, buyer beware with any seller I've learnt, ever since at 17 I bought my first motrocycle from a nice older gentleman, only to find out a couple of years later he actually sold it for his son, who looked like you did not want to buy anything from (never mind he turned out to be a really nice guy once you got to know him). And seller beware too, when I sold a great Mini to a friend, who then changed his mind about the price he wanted to pay, only after I signed over the title to him. Amazing what people will do when a little money is involved.

No - I surely wouldn't buy anything from the small guy (crackin' motor, ehh lad?), but wouldn't mind having the tall guy work on my Pagoda ;-)

I couldn't agree more.

Having followed most of the Wheeler Dealer episodes, I have come to the conclusion that their is now way that I would buy a car from them or let them work on my pagoda even.

As entertaining as it is to watch, it just doesn't instill a feeling of quality workmanship... ;)

I agree - and working in media, I know that there is a lot of stuff going on off-camera...

Mike Brewer and Edd China are the two very engaging hosts.  In this case, Mike is the Producer so that made the  choice easy.  The show doesn't pretend to be a collector car show.  It is to entertain and possibly to help the average punter get dependable transportaiton or make the most they can out of a used car.  Most of their advice is common sense, which is all too uncommon among many sellers and buyers.

I bet more than half the people on our forum couldn't do small patch body work as well as Mr. China. They never calculate any value for labor but it doesn't matter.  For the purposes of televison production there is no need to turn a profit, but there is a need to stay on schedule.  Sell it to the first person who'll agree to sign a release to go on camera.  Yes the show is a bit like high school with money, but it's just for a laugh and a short, entertaining diversion.

It's only TV, nobody dies.

Strangely no one from the UK has commented on this.   ???

That car is now in Italy.
A friend of mine (italian who lives in London) bought it in GB and imported the car here: this w107 was so good restored that he sold it 6 months later... ;D
