Result of my usual internet scouring, the mirror below is described as Mercedes Benz Driver's side mirror for 230SL 250SL and 280SL.
Comments welcome.....

That just looks plain odd...
Doesn't look like it will complement the beautiful lines of a pagoda and I doubt that this is original for these cars.
-
Maybe that was the kind John Lennon had on his Pagoda!

Hi Rick,
Don't know where you got the info that the mirror on the pic is for the 113 chassis - maybe it was from an ebay seller ... ;)
... as those individuals often tell and sell you "everything" being correct for a Mercedes 113 SL as long as they can make (more) money out of it ... :D
Ok, clearly that mirror pictured by you is not original for our pagodas, only the commonly known ones (early & late style).
However, in some countries side rearview mirrors were not common when our cars were new, e.g. in France.
When the SLs were new in the 60ies they were delivered by MB to these countries without door-mounted rearview mirror.
At a certain time point it became also the law in those countries to fit a mirror - and just a(ny) generic part was used instead.
This is a very common view on (ex-)French cars.
Best,
Achim

Same for cars in HK. They were delivered without mirrors. That's why many 230SL's have the later 280SL mirrors....haven't seen any with generic mirrors.
-
Mine was delivered (230sl) no mirror (optional I suppose). My current mirror added 7 years ago or so

Looks like it came off of a bicycle, not a Pagoda.

Just wondering.
Why did you go to ebay ( when myself or a dozen other vendors around here ) could have provided you with a real one?
Even if it is a mirror that was on a 113, it looks like it came off a scooter. I have seen those racing style mirrors on 113's and other cars so it's not uncommon to find anything that provides a reflection.
-
Dan,
The mirror came up during one of my routine 113 parts, Google expeditions. I have factory side view mirrors so I'm not in the market.
However, this particular item and it's (inaccurate) description piqued my interest.
IMO, the mirror is along the lines of these Lucas Fender mirrors:

114 coupe or sedan? It's kind of hard to tell.
Actually, the mirrors don't loolk that bad.......
-
Dan,
That is a pickup conversion done on a W114 sedan.
Was quite popular here in South Africa in the 70's and there are still a few floating around.
I know of a decent looking 280E (post face-lift model with ribbed taillights) here in Durban.
Not my cup of tea though...

I built a couple of those way back when I was a young-n.
