Title: White Wall Tires for 113
Post by: bootes on July 15, 2010, 13:55:27

Not much of a choice these days:

Cooper Trendsetter 3/4 WW 185/75R14  $86.00 at Universal
Phoenix 3/4 WW 185HR14  $245 at Universal and $229 at Coker

I am still using Pirelli P400's (185/75 R14) that were put on in '97.  I called Pirelli and they have long been discontinued apparently.

Any other suggestions for white walls?

Thanks!

I have Bridgestone Turanza's. Nice tire. Quiet. About $60each three years ago. 195/75R 14 is the closest size tire to what came on our cars originally. Tire Rack shows ww's from Kuhmo and Goodyear currently. $58.00 and $59.00ea respectively.

Try using the "search" tool to pick up A LOT of info on tires.

I bought Yokohama Avid for my car a few years ago. Good tires.

i use bridgestone ingsignia's-they are very good tires for our cars.             none of us are going to drive these cars at 140 miles per hour-these are good all around tires that have a nice whitewall

Well...I decided to go for the Phoenix tires.  I will comment if they're worthwhile.. or not - once I get some experience with them.  Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm in the same boat, which tire to put on my 230SL.   I refused a set of Hankook Mileage PlusII's yesterday because the DOT was two years old.  I only put a few miles on each year, so I'll age these tires out long before I wear them out.  I sure didn't want to start w/two year old tires.
Has anyone tried the Firestone FR380s?  They seem to come in the correct size (185 75-14) w/3/4" white wall.
Has anyone been able to convince their tire dealer that the DOT number is important to us 'collectors'?

I had the Firestones installed and they drive fine.  I'm not racing this car so my interest is good ride and good look. These match my expectations for a very reasonable price.

Michael Salami recommends the colker tire Firstone 185 HR 14 with 3?4 with wall and curb guard.

Now this Firestone FR380 is a new one on me, seems to be a value priced tire.  Nothing wrong with that as the Vredestein and Cokers seem to be in the stratosphere on price, and higher every time we turn around.

If you are replacing an existing tire set you are happy with, you can always gamble on the Firestones, and if they are better or equal to what you have, great.  If not, they would be an easy sell on Craigslist or eBay.

Just bought a set of Hancook Mileage Plus II 185/75 X 14 with 1/2 in WSW via Discount Tire Direct for $69 per tire shipping included.  Had them installed at Tire Kingdom for $14.50 each including balancing.  They look great, ride very nicely and cost a lot less that the Phoenix tires.  Your mileage may vary.  About the only non-Coker narrow whites I could find.  I bought a set of Yokahama's in the same size for my Datsun Roadster 4 years ago, (and like them), but they are no longer available in WSW.

You should post a photo, as the online photos of this tire don't show the WW.

My tires are incorrect size for the car (195/70 14) but look good and ride well. Price was right at $54 each. Fisk Classic purchased at America's tire store. When my original Continentals wore out (which was pretty quick) I had Michelin X 195/75 14 (also incorrect) put on. They lasted forever though:-)

Try the Uniroyals.  White wall correct dimension.  Look great.  Ride nice.  Price right there.

Dave--helpful for details here, as that's what most people want.

I checked the Uniroyal website today, for example, and they do not list a tire in the correct dimensions of 185-HR14.  If I went to the P-metric listings, they have a P185/75R14 listing for a Tiger Paw II http://www.uniroyaltires.com/tire-selector/size/pmetric/185/75/14/S/tiger-paw-awp-ii/tire-details ; is this the tire you are talking about?  Also, some of these tires people are suggesting such as this Uniroyal, the Hankook, the Fisk Classic, and others are not shown on manufacturer's websites with the white wall, so photos always help, too.  Since a WW is merely an appearance thing, the appearance of the WW on the tire is of utmost importance.

Fisk, by the way, is specifically a private-brand tire.  The name is an old-line name, from the early 20th century.  Bought by Uniroyal pre WWII...and now Uniroyal is owned by Micheliin.  They seem to have some older sizes available many in the 14" size, and the Fisk Classic is "exclusive" to Discount Tire (also known as America's Tire)

As a point of reference here is a picture (sorry for the poor quality) of my original 185/75 14 Continental tire. Sidewall looks similar to the Fisks but WW is wider.

Isnt today's 195/75/R14 closer to the original 185 HR 14 in overall dimension?

Here is a picture of the Uniroyal Tigerpaw II 195 75R14.  Width of WW looks similar to John's Fisk.  I got these because they were suppose to be the closest in diameter to the original.

Thought this all sounded too familiar....I posted this link in 2005....its a great cross reference even if it was intended for use by Miata owners. You can plug in all of the variables that you wish and see what the differences/similarities are...

The Technical Manual will get you there too...

The responses to my query of what tire to put on my 230SL contained great info.  Dave recommends that I try the Uniroyal.  “White wall, correct dimension…”
Kevin C. asked isn’t today’s 195/75/R14 closer to the original 185hr14 in overall dimension.  Is there any down-side to having 195 printed on the side of your tires as opposed to 185?

195-75/R14 are the closest to 185HR14 in diameter and circumference, not width.
The width is approximately 10 mm wider than a 185HR14 (195 - 185 = 10).
I have 195-75/R14 on my Pagoda.
My speedometer is less than 1 MPH in error.
In my opinion, my car looks correct from the side .... the tires are just a little wider than they should be .. not a problem for me  ;D
"Is there a down-side to having 195 printed on the side of the tire"?
You'll have to make that decision for yourself.

The Uniroyal Tigerpaw pictured by Jordan also comes in 185H14. Or at least it did two years ago when I bought mine. They have been very acceptable in performance.

Dave,
In your post, I thought you were stating the white wall itself had the correct dimension (width and location).
But, you were just talking about the tire, correct?
Because the picture of the Uniroyal appears to have a narrower white wall than the original.

Ok, I never said that I was ready for Pebble Beach.  I looked all over and found these to look the best to my eye.  P185/75R14

We were there this past weekend, in our Camry:-( Nice real estate! We did see a brand new shiny Red SLS AMG along with lots of other four wheel exotica tooling around. I hear the golf course is pretty nice too:-)

Told ya.

Told ya what?  The proper size for our tires (FWIW at this point in the game...) is properly denoted as an "E" Metric as E185/80HR-14.

E Metric
185MM Width
80 Series Aspect Ratio (when not noted, 80 is the default ;))
H speed rating
R radial
14 diameter.

The Uniroyal is NOT listed on the website today in a 185-80.  I'm not in the market, but if it does not come up on their tire selector I'd like to assume it isn't in production any longer?  Kind of moot as we are at the mercy of an ever-decreasing selection of tires... >:(

Gus and Jordan seemed to like the Uniroyals just fine, either in closer to original 185 or 10mm wider 195.
