Title: cost of engine rebuild
Post by: Cees Klumper on March 26, 2004, 00:21:51
Has anyone had a complete engine rebuild done lately? I was asked to comment on a quote for a rebuild of a 280 SL engine. Metric Motors is offering exchange engines for $5,300 so this would seem to be the price? http://www.mercedesengines.net/200s.htm

I had mine rebuilt here in Houston about a year and a half ago, cost more than $5,500.  Although I am happy with mine I think that metric is the way to go.  Even SL Tech recommends and uses them.

an alternative is to find a mechanic that also works at home in the evening/weekends..my engine is now out and apart and is being worked on by factory FORD TRained man..we will see how this works out as so far it looks like the parts to include new 87.5 pistons to be about $1900.  remember an engine is an engine is an engine

I just had my engine completely re-done, new pistons and all, for
2000$, the work was done by a Mercedes -Benz trained mechanic! but then again this is Beirut for you..

Aha - new (factory original Mahle) pistons + rings cost around $200 a piece here these days, so that's $1,200 right there. It sounds like there is some old stock floating around; get it while you can!

Early last year I rebuilt my engine with all new Mercedes parts including Mahle pistons, €110 each ! I gort everything from Socrim.

I did the removal, stripping, rebuilding and installation myself so the only labour costs were the ,machining !

Total cost €2,500 nett !
