What is the best way to remove and clean the fuel injector pump air filter.

AFAIK it's not possible.
The PAPER filter is sealed inside the metal housing and the whole thing must be replaced.
I did see on Jaj's recent post about FIP restoration that th photos showed a reconditioned filter, but it doesn't show the method and it's probably easier to just buy a new one anyway, even if they re a little pricey.

Yes the fuel injection pump fiter is meant to be changed as a complete sealed unit. You can test your old one by removing it and blowing through it to see if it is clogged. A skinny 19mm or 22mm wrench(size depending on year) will be needed to remove it.

I just changed mine a couple weeks ago. I got it from the Classic Center.

As a sidenote When I rebuilt the engine in my car(Froze up from 27 years of sitting) I replaced mine with the shiny looking one from a spare engine I bought for parts. It turns out when someone rebuilt the injection pump they re-plated the filter as well. I struggled for a year to sort out an odd warm up running problem only to find the filter had disintegrated in the plating process and the metal disc on top of the filter was banging around in the housing occasionally blocking the secondary air from getting into the engine. That was a bugger to find.
