Title: Taillight price
Post by: bjohnston115 on May 24, 2010, 17:19:57
I am selling some parts and wondering what the going price for taillights is.  They are off a 68 250sl and i have restored them to great condition.  I have seen them on ebay from 300-800 USD.  I have a guy who has made me an offer of 100 USD but i feel that is too low.  What is a real fair price?  What would you charge?

Thanks.

I would expect at 800 they would be new.  I dont think you will get many offers at that price.  I think that in very good condition I would pay 150-200 per side at the most.  Just my 2 cents.

Put them on eBay with a good, honest description and photos. The market place will tell you what they are worth. Put in a reasonable reserve if you must, but many buyers I know don't bid on auctions with reserve/

I agree with the suggestion to put them on ebay also.  I would say $150 to $250 per side if they are really great, but I also want to know exactly what was done to "restore" them?  Are the backs included?  Gaskets?  The lenses are the early style (not amber corners) right?  Have the lenses been removed from the chrome?  You can get some good feedback if you post pictures here (or in the for sale area).

68 250sl, is that the one with the orange blinkers  If so, I would agree with the other posters.  If it's the all red ones (230sl and early cars), then $500 plus minus might be achievable since that's what I would pay for them...

Why not hang on to them - they would great to have if some fool rear-ends you?

The all red tail lamps ceased in mid 1969 I believe?  My car built in January of '69 had all red until I changed them out.

I also noticed that mine are one piece, I also have the remnants of many others that look like they were in multiple pieces; the chrome bezel being separate.

One other thing: I've seen where new tail lamps don't fit old bodies all the time...I saw this myself on Bob Geco's 1968.  I did not have any issues fitting new to old on my car, but Bob's "out of box" experience was not pretty--which is why they are in the box still, waiting for an inevitable paint job when he can do the necessary body work to fit the new ones.

Ulf has a great point.  I have quite a few broken tail lamps inherited with the car.  I guess my Uncle the PO had been rear ended many times. >:(
