Title: my 280
Post by: wildatheart on May 21, 2010, 16:05:51
Took these pictures of my 1970 280SL. I keep thinking I might sell it, as I now have a child so it sees little use. But when a car looks this good, it's hard to let go..! Perhaps I should look into getting one of those sideways little rear seats fitted.

A bit of advice. DON'T SELL IT. You'll regret it forever. And, when you show the pictures to your child when he/she is 18 and picks up their driving license, he/she will never, ever forgive you either.

You may be right. Although, I think what tends to happen is that WE never forgive our child (or indeed ourselves) when they remould the bodywork the day after their birthday..!

I dont know how old your child is,  My 3 yr old daughter loves to ride in our 280 sl. It has no airbags, so over here, its okay to put her carseat in the front.  I dont know what your rules are over there, ... ...Dont let it go. You might regret it.

I would imagine we'll all be using corn on the cob powered hover shoes by then.

My 4 year old loves Audrey - sits in his seat strapped in next to me

And this past Friday he sat in the Kinder seat for the first time. OOOhhh it brought back memories. for the first time ever I went through what my dad went through:  a head bobbing around in the rear view mirror, never sitting still and deciding to turn around and "finger shoot" - and stick his tongue out - at the car behind. It amazes me how much is pre-programmed in kids. And as he's always strapped in facing the front, I'd not seen this before

Don't sell.

Don't be too hasty.  To be sure, think about it for 20 yrs.

Seriously, you'd be crazy to let it go that easy.

Hello jaap,

I can only agree to my previous speakers here.
Keep the SL.
You can get a cheap second whatsoever everyday's car for the regular use.
But keep the SL.

BTW,
I remember your (brilliant) photos.
You posted those already a couple of years ago and they received a lot of positive comments about your photographer's qualities by then.

Anyway,
you have come a long way with your SL so far. Why would you be willing to sell it now? It's fun (for you) to drive along with your daughter on the passenger seat (see previous comments) - and it will also be for your wife & daughter.
The only little drawback ... 3 persons in the SL is no longer the best choice nowadays...

Just my 2 cents ...

Hi

Let me offer an alternative point of view....

...Sell!

I have had the third photo onthe wall of my Office for the past couple of years, and recall your reason for the late registration.

If you do want to sell, drop me a line.

Cheers

Phil

Great to hear you like the picture Phil. Phil's advice notwithstanding, I sense a certain consensus here..! And I appreciate the encouragement to keep the car.  I mostly just regret that when I drive it, it is either without my daughter or without my wife, and usually I end up driving it, a bit, by myself (cue violins). Actually, cue some Doobie Brothers, because even driving it by myself feels pretty good.

I do crave the excitement of buying another new old car. To satisfy this craving, I might sell my Capri 280 instead - I don't imagine many here will disagree with that plan (it's a great car, honest!).

Thanks again guys.

Oooh that brings back memories. They were the "run out" model were they not - or close to it? Tis very nice and has clearly not rusted to bits

It's gorgeous and hopefully not been thrashed within an inch of it's life.

That said, sell it and keep the pagoda

Love the 'Capri', I had a couple of those when I was younger. I was an avid fan of 'the Professionals' when I was a kid. You can do a nice handbrake turn in one of those  :D

That's right, these last of the Capris were Capri '280's (sold in the UK only) based on the 2.8 Injection Special, with full leather interior and bigger wheels. Only painted in 'Brooklands' green. 1038 made.

Don't sell it, my kids (4 & 6) love my Pagoda and although I can't take them both at once, I still manage to cover a lot of miles with a happy kid next to me each year... ;)
