Title: Coolant Expansion tank piping
Post by: menesesjesse on May 20, 2010, 03:28:50
All,
I was driving my car today and realized I had a coolant leak.  The coolant seems to be coming from the pipe the connects between the coolant tank to the waterpump housing.  This pipe is corroded to the point that it leaks and I would like to replace it.  Has anyone replaced this? If so where did you purchase the pipe?  Thanks for the help.
Jesse

Are you tallking about the capsule-shaped expansion tank?  Unless you have one of the plastic ones it is made out of brass.   Remove it from the car, take it to a radiator shop, and they will fix it and re-spray it black for you.  Won't be expensive.  They will braize (sp?) a new piece of tubing on.

The pipe below the tank is leaking.  I have one of the earlier expansion tanks.  The pipe below it is steel and runs along the frame to the water pump housing. The pipe is corroded inside to the point that I feel it should be replaced.  I found one with SLS but it is very expensive.  I am not sure if someone has a good used one but I would be interested in it if the do. I may just use heater hose for the whole thing but this is only a temp fix and I would like it done right when I get the part. Thanks

Jesse, if you have if off the car, you should bring it to O'Reilly's and see if they will make one up for you.  I've made a number of similar pipe's using straight tubing they have in stock which is really cheap.

I havent seen an Oreillys in our area but maybe NAPA will have something similar.  I will check today after work.  My concern is the welded Y  joint that splits where one end goes to the heater core and the other to the tank.  i may have to use plastic joints.

menesesesjesse,
What year and model is your SL?
Many other member put information like year and model in their signature (I believe that is what it is called).
It makes the thread have more value for years to come.
It helps people help you.

I have a 1965 230 SL # 12261.  Mercedes used 3 types of coolant tanks I believe and I have the earliest brass type.  I am not sure if the piping was different with the new tanks.  Classic Mercedes in Irvine has said the part is NLA from them.  SLS may have itbut I am waiting on a quote.  I would think if anyone has a parts car they may have the piece.  My search goes on.  Thanks for the help.
