Title: A surprise under the bonnet...
Post by: seixever on May 15, 2010, 18:41:11
For the first time from when I bought my 250Sl, two years ago, yesterday I'd decided to wash the body and inside, trunk comprised;  so I've took out the spare wheel to clean the rubber mat.
Under the wheel (with his cromed ring)  there was a small bag with a zip, inside the bag there were the owner's manual (in italian), the manual for spares and the original (I think) tool bag, with the spare fuse box too!
Obviously the jack and the safety wedge were at their place.
That you believe it or no, I've guided this car for not more than 10 (ten!) kms since I own it because I still must change all the liquids (engine and gear oil, etc.) and the filters, so it has spent last two years to take dust...
Another interesting discovery that I've made inside the right fender along the chassis cross member, are some small written made with white chalk:  I think they are some factory signs, but I must verify better.
The car had two owners before me, the first was a lawyer, son of a Rsi high officer killed at the end of WW2, and the second an (actually) old man whose son sold me the car because he didn't like "these old traps: he preferred euros. Luckly".

I have had this dream!! Not kidding. Sadly, mine was a dream. Consider yourself really fortunate!

Next week I'll clean inside the car: do you think there is some possibility to find coins or, maybe, a forgotten cheque...?  ;D

This is a really great story and a nice surprise. The usual one is unfortunately slightly different, and mainly including the word "rust" or "bad craftmanship" in it. the pics look terrific and the car seems to be in great shape.
enjoy

I had bought a 230sl about five years ago as a parts car, while taking the car apart I found German coins (DM) dating back early sixties right about the time the car was made, I thought it was so cool, like to think they fell out of pockets of the test drivers or perhaps firs owners. I still have the coins but sadly the car is long gone.

I found a nickel (mine is an ex-San Diego, but Euro-spec car) and a brass plate engraved with the words "Made especially for Sam Krasner". Judging from a little spot of residual glue and a slight discolouration, I guess the plate used to be glued to the trim above the glove compartment. Cool to know that someone cherished this car enough for this...

Apart from a lot of white dog hair I found these US coins under my drivers seat, those are the origonal carpets, as new also in the foot wells.
I was also pleased to find the operating instructions of the soft top guide still stuck to the rear of it's compartment
Third image shows condition of all the documentation that came with the car.
Last image shows that the previous owners spent little or no time "on the tools"

I remember Green Stamps as well as Gold Bond Stamps.  You are correct, it took a bunch to get anything.

:D I found a little black book under the seat of a 64 230SL. It had phone numbers and descriptions of all of these georgeous women, and what their preferences (if you know what I mean) were. Problem was, they were all dead by 2007.  Oh well..........................

In which case they were probably too old for you in 1964 as well!
