Title: Tailpipe covers
Post by: johnshenry on May 12, 2010, 17:45:49
Are the tailpipe covers on the 280s standard and if so, how are they fastened?  My '69 has them, and I see them on many pics of other cars.  Mine have aluminum pop rivets underneath holding them to the steel pipe out of the muffler.  Looks like a PO hack.  How were they fastened originally???

Just a push fit i think. I was told they were like that so that if you backed into something they just slid inwards instead of buckling the exhaust system?

I would concur, the ones I purchased for my 250 SL were push on. Good point about the exhaust, but I don't think mine have enough extra length to make that much of a difference. Also easier to change if you do have a run in with something.
