???
After spending much money and effort restoring a 1971 280 SL I drove the car for about a week and noticed a dent had appeared in the bonnet about 20" approx from the front apex. I thought it was coincidence, and had the dent removed professionally straight away.
Then a week later to my horror the dent returned!
New engine and gearbox mountings were fitted as part of the restoration all genuine MB parts have been used, and checked with MB afterwards to make sure they were correct. A new rocker cover gasket has been used, again no different to the old one. The dent is DEFINATELY being caused by the top of the rocker box, as I used play- doh to check the exact location of the offending item against the dent made on the inside of the bonnet.
Has anyone come across this problem, or can anyone give me any clues as to what to try? I need to make about 1/4" clearence to stop it happening, and assume as the car is put under load it is causing the damage.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks
Jim

Perhaps the engine support arms are from a sedan (280SE) engine?

How about the motor mounts?
-
???
Thanks for all the speedy replies.
I have now discovered that a replacement engine has been fitted. looking at the numbers the original engine number was 130983-22-015965, and this has been replaced by number 1300161101. On the casting at the side of the engine it reads 280 SEL/SL. Does this mean it has come out of a sedan?
The mounts have different numbers on them to those quoted in the thread, but they are 127223020428 SEL. Does this mean I have an SEL engine, if so will this be causing the problem?
Look forward to your replies.

Jim

Hi, Jim,
You have a mounting bracket for a 108/111 vehicle, not correct for a W113.
See pictures in the post below by 66andblue for the correct ones:

I just happen to have the correct parts, left over from an engine swap. PM me and maybe we can do a deal.
