To remove the indicator/ wiper stalk first carefully pull out the grommet at the bottom of the stalk, remove two screws. Remove panel under the dash, the cable comes thro a hole in the steering wheel shaft cowl about half way down then follow the cable to its plug and disconnect. Pull the cable and plug thro the steering wheel shaft cowl and thats it.
At least that's how i remember it on a RHD car.

I recall that I needed to remove the connector in my 230SL to pull the wire out of the steering column and to install the new harness. I made a diagram of the connector and indicated the location of each wire color code. More challenging than it sounds as there are a lot of wires.

I did this about 3 weeks ago. Make sure you remove the connector and cover the wires with tape after you have made a diagram of where things go. I used some light soapy mist to help the harness come out and go in. Patience is always a good thing here. Good luck

I removed the connector the first time I did this. The second time I did not remove the the connector - it just pulls right thro no problem. You might have to wiggle it a bit to get alignment but it will come thro with very little effort. Threads back in easily also.

You will also need to disconnect the two horn wires from the turn signal switch before you can remove it. On your 280 SL I agree that the large connector will pass through the metalwork of the steering column, but only if turned one way. After you get it out, look down (or up) through the space and you will see that one side is somewhat concave, while the other is convex. The back of the plug will need to face the concave side to fit back through.
Cheers,
