Title: opinions on pagoda for sale?
Post by: pj on March 26, 2010, 16:45:08
Hi everyone,
sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum... today I happened to see this 1966 model for sale...
www.bramclassauto.com/showvehicle.php?action=show&id=1101
and it's also listed on eBay...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-SL-Class_W0QQitemZ190383753676QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item2c53c189cc

As I'm a total beginner, I'd love to hear some reactions based on your experience.

Complete cosmetic and mechanical restoration? Buy a car that needs nothing? It looks like it needs plenty of work. Starting with motor mounts, the engine doesn't line up to the air cleaner, a clue about the mounts in most cases. Taillights are incorrect amber/red, should be all red. Missing the rearmost chrome trim on the sides, must have lost those. What is over the radio opening, tin foil? It doesn't look like the very expensive radio delete plate it must have had because there is no antenna. No battery hold down. Some extra wires coming out of the firewall. This car is pretty cobbed up for a recent restoration by a mechanic/owner. I have an idea this car has plenty of rust. Get pics of the underside and floor pans with the carpet out. Also what is that thing mounted on the trunk lid, looks like holes were drilled. If the price is right it probably will come out OK, depending on the rust. There are some expensive things needed to get this car right. Also the 280 engine doesn't help the value in most cases.

Thanks for pointing those things out to me! You have justified my humility  :)

I did contact the seller today and the "advertised" price is C$30k. I do like that it's got the Euro-look but I am holding out to find a stick shift Pagoda.

I would definitely pass at that price. You can do a lot better -- although if a RHD is what you are after, it might take some searching. Good luck.

For $30K you don't even get a hardtop, but you do get a soft top that fits poorly.
