I have a 1969 280 SL. I was just inspecting the two front engine mount rubber cushion's & noticed that the bolt on the bottom of the rubber cushion on the right side, as viewed from the bottom of the car is backed out about 1/4". When I checked the other side, the bolt was backed out about 1/2". I looked in the Haynes manual to see if I could find a cross section of this assembly so I could better understand how this go's together but could find nothing. I would think these lower bolts are suppose to be tight. Any help would be appreciated. Possably a picture?

I think It means that your engine mounts are old & they need to be changed, after years of engine weight and heat from the engine they tend to dry up & sag. Much like us :D

The advice given earlier is correct. Most likley the rubber has hardened and contracted from age, and the bolts haven't really moved. Either way, its an easy fix. No special equipment needed, just some agent orange to get the grease back of the fingernails. Have fun. Probably no luxury to give your engine, and, at least as important, the frame and your butt the proper cushioning.

Thank all of you who replied to my question, I would not have thought of that. I will order some new mounts tomarrow. Sounds like you saved me a lot of work trying to tighten those bolts.

While you are at it, it would also be beneficial to replace the transmission mount as well.
