Title: fuel additive

I have been purchasing 92/93 octane unleaded gas for my 1966 230SL (has a rebuilt 280 engine).  should I be adding some sort of additive to add lead?  What do you guys do?

Like you, I buy only premium fuel which is as you state, somewhere in the 92/93 octane range.  I don't add any "lead", I don't use racing fuel, or avgas, or any other non-standard fuel.  I do add, a couple of times a year, Techron fuel injection cleaner.  I usually add on container of that per tank before a long trip--so it does its thing and doesn't remain in one of those tanks of fuel I don't use all that often.

Like many in the northern climates I store the car in winter, with a full tank of premium and the requisite amount of Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer in it.  That full tank will get completely consumed on the spring trip home around mid-April.

Couple of hundred ml of 2 stroke oil in every other tank or so to keep things moving along.

I use lead additive, but only because I've got about 10 bottles of the stuff. Not sure I'll bother to buy more of it.

In terms of injections cleaners and octane boosters, the UK consumer agency, 'Which?' tested a load of these things and no one was deemed to make any difference to the way the vehicle ran. (In either diesel or petrol).

I have used BG44K in my 113 on the advice of someone. No noticable difference, and v expensive, but lots of good write-ups on the net.

I also put 2 stroke in my diesel Land Rover; it does make it quieter, start more quickly and it produces less soot.

Nope, no lead required.
