Title: Rear main seal leaking what to do at the same time
Post by: erickmarciano on February 23, 2010, 02:34:26
my engine runs very well
got 140 on each cylinder except # 3 at 120
before outing the car away for winter spart plug #3 had a weird white crusty deposit
Want to replace the main real seal since I will remove the crank
should I replace the
1 main bearings
2 conecting rod bearings
3 piston rings
4 rebuilt the head
how are the small end of the conecting rods
are they prone in going bad
am I opening up a can of worms?
Thanks

Hello Erick,

Most often the crankshaft is not removed as the replacement of  the lower rear seal half will most often solve the problem. In this way the crankshaft, bearings, timing chain etc. are not disturbed. If you choose to do both halves you will need to remove the crankshaft, unhook the timing chain which will disturb the camshft timing, ignition timing and injection timing also. Replacement of the bearings is not normally needed unless the crankshaft also needs reconditioned.

Replacing just the lower rear seal half does require dropping the oil pan which will involve lifting the engine or dropping the front subframe. I would also change the front cranshaft seal. Carefully inspect the oil pan for any metal or debris which could be signs internal engine damage.
