Title: Help! Please help me identify this head (#180 016 29 01 230)
Post by: Shadesh on January 15, 2010, 14:58:04
I have a 1971 280SE/A with vin # 108 018 12 071273.  The engine block # 130 980 12 053213 and head # 130 016 08 01  280 SE/A.

I bought a cylinder head from a junk yard and upon receiving via UPS, I found that the number stamped on the head was "180 016 29 01    230"

Can this head be mated to my engine block?  What car is the head from? I provided the information above to the junk yard and they said that the head was compatible with my year.

Did I get the wrong part here?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Shadesh

I have one of those heads. Casting number 130 061 11 01 with a euro cam shaft.  It needs to usual rebuild but has never been touched.

The 230 head you have is for some old sedan - probably a fin car like a 230S. It's not even close. It's for an engine with far smaller bore and carbs. You better send that one back or use it for a door stopper.  ;)

hmm. What do you mean by "conversion opportunity".  Are there newer engines that I can install?

Does the 230 head have injectors?? or holes for them?

Actually, it for a non fuel injection engine as Dan has determined.  It has no injector holes and the chain gallery is not even wide enough to fit on the block. Not to mention the water passages in the head do not line up with those in the block.

I hope your seller has a good return policy.

I purchased this from a junk yard in OH.  They didn't want to deal with the return so will refund my money and I get to keep the head.  I'll see if anyone wants to purchase.
