Title: What is this part?
Post by: Jordan on January 04, 2010, 18:31:09
Can anyone identify the attached part?   ??? Don't know what it is, what it is for or even if it goes with this car (230SL).  Found it yesterday on the engine.  Looks like some kind of bracket or hanger.  Other than when I went to look at the car before buying it last fall I have not had a chance to really go over the car since it was delivered.  I don't know if the piece was left on the engine by the previous owner and belongs to another car.  Anyone know what it is?  Thanks.
Marcus

One appears to be a ball point pen (my car has one of these), as for the other,  ??? ???

it is the hook that grabs onto the camshaft for a rocker arm / valve spring compressor.

Thanks Al.  Is this something that can be seen with the hood up?  If so can you take a picture so I can get an idea where it goes and how it fits.  Many thanks.

It is half of a special MB tool for compressing the valve springs / removing rocker arms.
A mechanic left it behind as a gift for you.

The offset hook that you found is for the M110 280 twin cam engine.

Sell it on E-bay

Many thanks Al.  At least I don't have to worry about something being missing.  :D

if you bought the car locally you should give it back to the mechanic, It is a fairly spendy piece of equipment, only sold as a complete unit. You will have a new best friend.

I bought the car from its previous owner in the southeast of NY, about a 7-8hr drive.  This was the only MB he had so I don't think it would have been his.  I'll have to check the records to see where and when it was serviced last.  Thanks again for your help.
