Title: Auto transmission problem

I noticed that recently my transmission was losing fluid quickly, then I noticed smoke coming from the exauhst under acceleration and heavy fumes. So I think that it is the modulator diaphram correct me if I'm wrong. Is it hard to replace the modulator and are any adjustments needed

Hello,

If the modulator diaphragm has gone bad, the #6 spark plug may get oil (trans fluid) on it also. It is a bit of work.  You will need to remove the transmission mounting plate and allow the transmission to lower itself so that the modulator unit is more accessable. If needed the drive shaft can also be disconnected at the transmission to allow it to lower even further. You may not need to make any adjustments as long as you do not alter the original  adjustment.

Disconnect the vacuum line and the three 9mm head bolts.  Be careful not to loose the spring inside. The diaphragm can easily be replaced at this point.

Keep us up to date, this is a first time topic on this forum.

After repairs are finished, the car may continue to smoke for some time, as the raw ATF is burned out of the exhaust system!

Part can be bought easily. i just did mine over the summer and I must say if you will be doing it on your back I would pass.  JA is right about the tranny having to come down.  For this, you will need to remove the driveshaft and I would say it would be easier to just drop the tranny and do the job on the bench.  This way you can do a good cleaning and go through all the crush seals while your at it.  Good luck with this.

thanks you guys replaced it today, not all that hard.

did it with the car on jack stands, laying on my back... really didnt want to drop the tranny.
all is good from what i can tell. the old diaphram didnt look all that bad just kinda stiff and the center metal piece just poped out.

when i took off the 3 screws holding the cover to the trans a bunch of nasty looking fluid came out of it?

Don't forget, Cashew is 17 or 18 now, a bit more nimble than us guys... as they say, Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV)  ;D
