Hi, Just need confirmation - The screws which hold the headlight units to the bodywork, should they be machine screws or self tapping screws thanks

Larry, if I remember correctly, it should be self tapping screws.

I am not convinced. ;)

The four screws holding down the headlight unit are no self tapping screws but threaded screws.
M4 Philips machine screws if I remember that correctly. Or was it M3? I believe M4.
These funny screws are quite unique because of the head and the tip of the thread which is kind of cone-like. Couldn't find a correct replacement yet but saw them on a brand-new set of headlight units (Europa style). ;)

Definitely the headlight housings have welded-in clamps with a metric thread.

Naj knows the dimensions definitely.

The OP needs to clarify whether he means the headlight door or the headlamp lamp holder thing.

Yes, I agree. 4mm screws with small head and a few front threads missing on to screw to help locating the holes when fitting.

Ok, thanks for that. I thought they might be 4mm machine screws but mine, like many i suspect, have been replaced with self tappers over the years.

I wasn't quite sure about the size anymore.
The other unique feature of these screws is that the Philips head is thick and flat and not lens-like (lenticular) as typical Philips screws are.
Sadly I have not yet been able to figure out what DIN or ISO code these screws are.

I cannot find the part # as well.

EPC lists self tappers but I may be lookin in the wrong place  >:(

Looking in the 250 SL book, i see two possibles (which I am typing as listed in the parts book)

DIN 007981004331, lens head screw, sheet metal. The DIN reference book gives BZ 4.2 X16 DBL 8451-21 (high polish galvanic iridescent passivation,standard version, which would be a 4.2 mm diameter, 16 mm length
or

DIN 007981 003228 lens head screw, sheet metal (mounting angle to ornamental frame)  this would be a BZ 3.9 mm diameter, 9.5 mm length, with the same finish DBL8451-21.

Verification?

Hi Guys,

Here are 3 pics of the original screw for headlight aluminium frame fixing on the body front fender.
As you will see on that screw :
--> little pilot end;
--> what you call in us : cheese pan head;
--> Philips driving print;
--> M4 thread,
--> Grey/white zinc plated.

I hope this information will help.
I've found some more screws on one SEDAN W108 280S (same screws) because, as for some others W113, mine was fitted with non original screws.
