Title: Factory Wind Stop for 113?
Post by: Bullethead on November 16, 2009, 03:28:37
A German parts source is advertising a "rare option for 113 only" Mercedes factory wind stop or windscreen for 230-280SL.
This is an anti-buffeting device familiar as an option or aftermarket item for later SL models, but I've never seen or heard of one for our cars.
It appears to be constructed of black folding metal tubes with black fabric screen, and attaches to the folding top cover's leading edge.
Can anyone verify that Mercedes offered this during production of the 113? Is it shown in any accessory catalogue of the period?

Thanks for any insight/assistance!

I bought one from a company in the UK but I don't remember the name of the company.  Mine has a black frame with a fine mesh screen.

Here's one with plexi.

I appreciate the thread link and photos, and am familiar with the aftermarket screens. But was there a factory option wind stop?
Seems unlikely unless Mercedes added it to their catalogue well after the 113 was supplanted by the 107.

I have a faint copy of all the available options for our cars, and no, a windscreen is not on the list.

Thanks Peter, that's what I suspected... now to correct a vendor's false advertising...  ::)

Who was the vendor?  There are a few on eBay selling items like this and other parts claiming they are original.  Most of their items are cheep knockoffs.  Beware.  I just bought an under dash light and the part is marked made in Mexico.  The guy put it in a MB wrapper with a 113 part number.  The number on the wrapper matched a small chrome piece at the top of the windshield.  I am in an eBay dispute with the vendor as we speak.

Achim: the question was: Was there an original factory option wind screen.... not Is there a factory option windscreen. I answered the first question... you answered the second, which was never asked! In fact, the OP already knew the answer to the second question!

Not joking, the ad suggested the windscreen was an original option; I doubted that. A useful product for sure, but not from period.
No worries, Achim... thanks for the links. That is the exact product being offered by kcigermany, and at $475.00 plus shipping a bargain
compared to Mercedes price. Still for sale... I'm not sure I want one though. Maybe after I get the car on the road again I'll feel differently!

Brad, that light you bought is not a Mercedes part per se but made by Hella I believe, and was/is identical to many courtesy lights on many German cars of the era, such as VW and BMW.  I had a 1978 Rabbit (Golf to the Euro folks) and a 1979 BMW and both had this same courtesy light as my Pagoda.  Made in Mexico is probably new production, not a cheap knockoff.

The OEM Bosch headlight doors are now made in the Czech Republic.  Many Bosch Spark plugs are made in India.  I believe all Bosch horns are made in Spain.  Bosch ignition coils come from Mexico and Brazil.  ALL this stuff used to be made in Germany.  This is the "global economy" we live in, I'm afraid.

The wire connector tabs are different.  The light would work with the car if I added some wire connectors.  I found the light he sold me for $5.95 on a web site.  The vendor said he would refund my money.  The light was cheaper quality than an original.  His add said new OEM made in Germany.  The SLS web site sells this light for 23 euro.  It is also made in Mexico.  The originals are $63 from the classic center.

Since my first posting on this I did manage to fix the one in my car by cleaning and lubing the contact switch.  It was stuck in the off position.

I remember discussing this with kcigermany because the b&w picture he shows on the sl installed did not look like the item he was selling, the screen had a different shape ...it looked misleading.  Also, take a look at the "period correct chrome fog lights". You get the impression that those were the lights that was sold in the 60s and early 70s for bmw e9s.  Those lights are more contemporary with a conical back rather than roundish back.  I have also seeing those fog lights advertised for our sls. Sorry to say....but I think his adds are misleading. If you think I am wrong I would be more than happy to detract my statement.

Currently another German vendor is selling Vetus brand wipers as original MB wipers the current bid is $152.  They are $13 each on the Vetus web site.  I have this exact set that I was duped by kcigermany.  The wipers are ok but not oem.  I think I paid about $50.  I am getting tired of these vendors substituting parts after purchase.

Brad,

Time for a reality check.  Those who have been around this site, and the Pagoda world, have long and often sad stories about KCI Germany; threats of lawsuits, all kinds of stuff that you are discovering.  I think if you go back you'll find quite a few posts on the subject.

I can tell you this for what its worth--I would never, ever even LOOK at a KCI Germany advertisement for ANYTHING, there's been so much bad press on the matter.  Buy anything from them?  Not a chance.  Ever.  We have too many solid, reputable citizens of the parts world that work long and hard at being good at what they do.  Yes, sometimes things cost a little more, but when you look at the wreckage in the wake of KCI, or situations like Lilly discovered when trying to find an inexpensive but quality grill star and barrel, you might think twice about trying to always get the absolute lowest price.  The solid reputations of people like K&K; of Miller's and many others should be paramount over a low price for a deceptively advertised part, or in some cases, parts that don't exist.  Too many scammers out there; don't feed them.

And, again, you have to know and understand what you are buying.  Be suspicious of items advertised as Made in Germany when current production of such items is not there any more.  Unless the vendor is offering NOS, you are probably looking at an ad either deceptive, or naive--both of which are trouble.  Much of Bosch, Hella, and so many other Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers of items for German cars has moved "offshore" into their other factories.

I understand your comment about the light.  There are plenty of items I've received from MB, in original packaging, that had something different and didn't fit any longer.  It is just one of those things with running changes.  Sometimes you just have to adapt.

Sorry for the bad news, but I'm simply trying to explain what you have been discovering on your own.

Hey, I thought we were not allowed to speak on the forum about the ethics and honesty of KCIGermany because they will sue us all - isn't that correct?  I thought I read that in the "before you post section".  Anyway, I don't know anyone who is willing to purchase anything from them.   And I don't recall ever hearing anything good about the seller.   I recall hearing LOTS of bad, but none of that can be repeated because I don't want to be sued.
