I have the opportunity bo buy a 4 speed manual transmission from a 110 230 sedan. (and everything else from the car that I want). How much of this is usable for a 113 conversion from automatic to manual? Thanks Scott ps - any hints on what I should pay, or what I could sell this for if I don't do the job after buying parts?

Hello Scoot,
Quite a project but do-able. Probably not advisable for the week-end warrior. The fact that you are mixing a W127 and W129 parts around makes it quite a bit more complicated. The M127 engines have counter-balanced flywheels and the M129 (SL) engines have balanced flywheels. You will have to take the two flywheels to a machine shop and have them matched for balance to your 250 SL flywheel. In addition the flywheel to crankshaft bolts are alarger diameter on your 250SL so the machine shop will also have to bore the flywheel bolt holes out a bit. You will have to replace or lenghthen your front drive shaft half. (standard transmissions are shorter thant the automatics) The speedometer cable will be different. You will need the hydraulics which includes the fluid lines master and slave cylinder and the pedal assembly. (your sedan parts should be the same on the hydraulics and pedals.
Assuming your parts sedan is a floor shift, you will need to salvage the main linkage rod, the two support rods and the shifter assembly. You will have some minor wiring issues to deal with now that the automatic has been removed.
The clutch assembly and throw out bearing should interchange.
Having your parts car close by is almost a must for this kind of adventure.
Almost makes more sense to find a W113 standard and sell your other? Otherwise keep us up to date.

It's pretty rare but it must happen once in a while - he got some of this a bit off.
I wouldn't even bother with the 230S flywheel and I would get one out of a 280 or 250 engined car. Any 250 or 280 standard would work , SE or not. First of all, you would have no ballancing problems and it would fit your crank without resorting to a whole bunch of machining.
The rest however, Joe got very right.

I'm sufficiently concerned that I'm not going to pursue it. Having said that, there is a nice 110.011 in Monrovia CA w/ a 4-speed. 3333 S. Peck Rd. Pick-a-part. (or whatever it is called)

This is still a good find. This 230 engine has a 230SL crankshaft, and the later connecting rods which will accept the later, more available pistons which can be used in a 230SL. If it has power steering the gearbox and pump are the same as a W113. Don't forget the NLA window crank handles. The coolant tank is the same. The standard gear box is a good item as is the differential.
The front disc brakes are the hard to find Girling as on the 230SL.

Thanks for the good information. I may go back for the steering box and pump. The window cranks and perfect brown inserts are already posted to ebay. The coolant tank had a big dent in it so I passed on it. Is there a market for the front calipers? Interesting - thanks a bunch! Scott

Those are already on ebay also. But they are really pitted. Is the good part the lock cylinders or the handles? (I have the key). The back handles looked pretty good but I didn't take them. Can I put the lock cylinders from the front handles into the back handles and make something more valuable because of less pitting, or is the value in the lock cylinders? thanks!

The front door handles are the same on the cylinder and exterior parts, but the finger extension on the inside that hits the lock latch and opening catch are longer on the SL's to compensate for the thicker doors.
Lots of bolts and screws are the same, horns, relays, radio, and other parts that I cannot think of now.

Don't forget to check the steering wheel, horn pad etc. Same as 230SL
