Hello there,
i am new member to this website and the world of SL. I always admired the Pagoda SL as well as 63-71 SE's. One day i hope to have both cars!!
Towards that goal, i just purchased a 71 280 SL that needs work sight unseen. i have not received the car yet but started my homework (admittedly a bit late...) but that is part of the learning process i guess.
First dilemma i face is the color combination. Based on the pictures of the data card and car i found the below discrepancies:
1. Body and Top code on the data car are 050 (which is white according to the website links on this forum). The car is red!!
2. The interior is listed 250 which is Cognac leather which looks correct on the car (at least from the pics)
3. The soft top is listed as 746 ( according the the links it is Verdeckstoff 8023 dunkelbraun Softtop 8023 dark brown) The current top is beige and damaged which will be replaced with correct color.
i personally have not seen a white car 050 with Cognac interior and dark brown top. Is this common? does anyone have this combination? do you mind sharing pics?
i would have expected the interior to be black with a white car.
what color the steering wheel should be? it is black on the car now.
i am sure i will have lot more questions as i progress on this project.. but this is just a start.
Thanks for all your help/input.
Best regards,
Dean

Go to www.motoringinvestments.com website for referance photos of these cars. I am restoring a 69 280sl and have found it helpful.
I think white steering wheels were a factory option but black was standard.
Good luck

Dean,
if you have the data card for your car you can check what the original color combination was.
If you don't have it request one from the Classical Center, it is free.
The most frequent combinations are listed here: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/RecommendedCombinations

HI Ash, thanks for the link. It is an awesome restoration, unfortunately i cannot afford :(
Alfred, i have a picture of the data card and the color combination is listed as UT 050 OT 050 interior 250 and soft top is 746
which i was able to decipher based on the links in this website as:
outside color white, hard top and hub caps white, interior leather Cognac, soft top dark brown. This color combo does not appear on the recommended color combo link you advised.
i did some searching and found one car on the registry list of the website to have the same combination as below info:
Christiaan Engelmann 1968 280 SL automatic White (050), Cognac Brown leather, White hardtop / darkbrown softtop 113044 12 006417 2.8 liter Automatic / Becker radio-cassette player / power steering / leather 0 km Within a few months full restauration (4 1/2 years) should be completed.
Unfortunately, i could not find the member info to contact him for photos.
Anyone out there knows Christiaan??
Anyone has this color combo 050, 746, 050, 250? would love to see pics.
Thanks

Dean,
click on "Members" in the bar above and search for members. Search for "Christiaan" and then send him an email through this web site.
And here are 3 pix of a white car with a combination that could be like yours, although no softtop picture:

Hi Alfred,
I finally got the car today. YEAH!!!!!!!
It is in much better shape than i anticipated. I need to get the engine fixed first and then will see what else is needed.... Stay tuned.
re the color, I found on it the note as:
Surinam Red Metalic
Paint Code K8135K
DuPont Chroma base
I did not find this color listed in the manual. Is it a MBZ color?
The color is not bad and looks like they did a full body paint on the car from what i can tell.

Congrats... pictures please...
and no, that does not look like an original Mercedes Benz color... those were supplied by Herberts or Glasurit (http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/PaintCodes)
